I know this has been addressed somewhat here but most of it has been over my head.

I want an external USB connection writer.

What I want to be able to do...

Make copy's of kids games so when they ruin them I can pull out a new one.

Make copy's of movies for the same reason

Store photos files etc.

My laptop has a cd/dvd player and my Home computer has a cd player. So I will also need it to be able to play movies etc on the home pc.

I understand the basic r/rw designations but beyond that I am lost. Budget is important but not paramount. It looks like they can be had for 150-200. Also speed is nice but not a huge consideration.

What do I want or need as far as capability's physically as well as what to look for in software.

If some of this was redundant I am sorry as I really do not know what I am talking about.

Re: External CD/DVD writer?

Great idea to make copies, but with all the different formats, and copy protections built into the cds/dvds and the players themselves, I think its gonna be rough.

I would try buying the kids an erector set, a doll house, or a snow shovel, until they are capable of taking care of them. :p

Side note. We only got a couple inches out of that snow storm. They haven't even opened the trails over here, yet.

Why do you want an external drive?

Roscoe...they do fair at taking care of them and most of them that we get do have some educatinal redemption as opposed to mind numbing hours of shootumup's. They are also limited to play time on the computer.

Boomyal, the laptop takes the expensive factory writter so I figgured make it dual computer functional. As the laptop get's used the most.

The reason I am looking now is twofold...1) I just lost three years of data off my laptop, I could have proabably saved it but figured I would just wipe it instead. 2) I now have a decent digital camera and would like the storage ability the rest of the capability's would just be nice to have I figured.

I will ponder external hard drive but just seems to me cd would be a nice storage medium, I'm not really short on hard drive space. Figured if I gat a cd writter for an extra 100 I could be into a DVD writter. Something to consider though. Yes I have USB 2.0 on both.

For data storage whether it be pictures or music or whatever, external usb harddrive is faster. Save the cd/dvd for pure portability
