What what is an external resistor relating to a coil.My tune up set for the spring showed and "use with external resistor" is stamped on the coil.I just want to make sure I have the right one. The coil I have is a 12-32193a2 and is for a 1984 229.-Blair

Re: External resistor

In the case of Mercruiser, when they built the engine wiring harness they actually built the wire running to the coil as a resistive wire. It looks just like any other purple wire, but it's not, it has a resistance of 1.8 to 2Ω. And that is the 'external resistor' referred to on the coil you bought... If you change the points out for an electronic system, then that resistive wire needs to be bypassed...
