Hay all, just puting my 86 bayliner back together after much learning. Have the engine back in and getting ready to hang the drive. Its been around a year and a half so disassambly is a little fuzzy (maybe all the beers?). There is an extra hole, about an inch or so dia, just to the right of the exhaust. I'll be damed if I know what goes in it. Any Ideas?????

Maybe let us in on what your engine and drive are.
Also take a pic and post it. That way we can see it also.

Based on the details provided: That's where the muffler bearing bellows should be. Nothing sucks more than corroded muffler bearings.

OK I was bored and decided to do a little digging around. Turns out our buddy has a Volvo AQ125B.

It's just a hole to the ocean? Inside it just deadends into the exhaust riser??

Maybe for a different engine?? Or a trim that dosen't suck??

I believe you are referring to the rubber hook, as Volvo calls it, but I'm not really sure as your description is a little vague.
Anyway, the rubber hook is a relief valve. It lets the water from the exhaust drain out when running on idle, as pressure is lower in lower depts of water, it also drains the water when engine is shut off, and prevents water building up in the exhaust in both instances.

They put a rubber plug in it. In boat motor parts - volvopenta - aq125b (86) -transmission connection it is #26 in the exploded view. I just can not understand why they would put a hole there?

Thanks for the input.

It's where the relief valve is supposed to be. It seems it is not used on your particular engine, and the hole is plugged. Nothing to worry about.

On V8 engines, the rubber hook (aka blubber valve) was used. It's an idle relief port. The same transom shield was used for all types of engines. Your particular engine doesn't use the idle relief so they just plugged the hole to keep water from leaking into the boat.

Thanks for the input, doesn't seem to be much holding the plug in. i'm thinking of using some windshield urthane on it.
