My throttle grip has quite a bit of excess play, in my opinion. You can turn the twist grip almost 1/2 an inch before the throttle cam, under the magneto, even starts to move. It has a similar play in the both directions. The play seems to be reduced a little when the motor is running but is still there. I can still operate the throttle OK but this play certainly renders the "slow, shift, start, fast" indicators pretty useless.

Any idea what would cause this and if it can be fixed.

Optsy...the vertical shaft up to the armature plate linkage is linked to the control shaft lever by a pin...I had to replace this pin once as one of the "wings" that fit into that control shaft slot had partially broken and it gave similar symptoms. Also, if the two sets of gears on the control shaft aren't aligned properly, you could have the 2 open spaces < no teeth > on the gears moving w/o meshing to any teeth, thus no movement of the last part of the control shaft until 2 teeth do mesh.

Like AITn says, there are gears connecting the vertical control shaft to the tiller shaft, and they don't have teeth all around -- have to be aligned right. Additionally, there is a gear/bushing assembly, so potential for broken gear teeth or bad alignment. If the problem occurred suddenly, of course, it could be breakage. If you did some disassembly and reassembly, might check a parts diagram and see whether the gears are assembled correctly.

Are you talking about the pin that holds the "vertical control shaft gear" in place or the "vertical control shaft" itself. The vertical control shaft is the part that connects armature plate and the bottom of it sits in the vertical control shaft gear. I believe the vertical control shaft just sits in there but there is a pin holding the vertical control shaft gear. Not sure how that pin would come out, if it needs to.

yeah..disregard pin advice as that was for a different set up altogether...looks like the control shaft inner gear has 3 notches that corresponding knobs from the control shaft slip into..as to aligning the vertical shaft gear with the control shaft inner gear...look for a dot on the inner gear face and this should align with a raised arrow head on the vertical control shaft gear...if Leroy has posted some pics of this on his website it may make that clearer. < leroy's ramblings 9.9/15 hp. maintenance and repair >...I recall those bronze gears being "pricey" when I checked a few years ago
