Re: Exxon posts record profits- again

Actually, I never read the second line . . . However, I still feel the same. Oil companies are not "really bad people doing really bad stuff", somebody's gotta give them some love too

A couple of years back the company I work for messed up on some Refuse Trucks that we put fuel systems on. Seems every once in a blue moon they would get a weird combination of erroneous signals in the ECM that we supplied. Well since no one programmed the ECM with a suggestion on what to do when it saw these signals, it just said "OK then, if you're not telling me, I am gonna command the last good RPM request you gave me until, oh, well until you turn the key off and start over". Well it seemed that drivers didn't like that . . . It kinda freaked them out when they let off the pedal and the loaded trash truck didn't slow down :% Anyway . . . there are seven ECMs on this type of vehicle that all "talk" to the engine, and we all honestly had no idea who was doing it. All of us got involved and flew in teams of engineers and put trucks on test tracks etc. etc. Finally found out that it was the littlest guys in the room :$ Well we fixed it, and then the invoices started flying, and we started negotiating to fairly clear it all up. Well one of them decided they better get there legal team involved and then all bets were off :| Nobody would (could) talk to anybody anymore :| And we were actually starting to pay people at the time. Once the lawyers got involved it became a total mess and of course legal fees became an issue. So, frankly I am not going to judge anybody in these situations. I am also not naive enough to think that the Exxon Valdez would've been magically cleaned up all by itself if Exxon was left to its own, but hey "ship happens" . . .

CJY,

You said "this is gonna get good" and I was trying to say yes, it is good. Meaning the profit, It was a reach . . .

Don't put words in my mouth, Ray.

It is my opinion that losers always envy and often hate winners.

I neither envy nor hate Ms. Pelosi.

I merely have confidence that she will pursue her class war.

No Haut...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) returned from a four-day trip to Iraq and Afghanistan Monday night to a bizarre, Hitchcock-ian scene -- a beady-eyed, black bird flying around her posh Georgetown apartment.

Were this bird perched upon a bust of Pallas just above her chamber door ("perched, and sat, and nothing more"), then she'd be cool with that. But this simply wasn't Edgar Allan Poe's raven, if it was a raven at all.

No, this was a scene written for Tippi Hedren, though truth be told, it was only one bird ... and oh, OK, it wasn't pecking the Speaker to bits and pieces. But it was scary!

The bird, Pelosi told her colleagues and aides the next day, was flying around, knocking things over as she and an employee of her condo building chased the feathered fiend for an hour.

Finally, according to someone who heard Pelosi's story, they "trapped the bird with a brown bag." Menacing as it was, Pelosi, ever the San Francisco tree-hugger, made an executive decision that the bird should be liberated. So the building staffer, our source reports, "took it outside and released it."

So it took this internationally accredited expert in warfare an hour or more to catch a bird?... with the help of her staff?... and then she let it go???

Truly the Democrats in action. :p

I'm all for profits and good for them.
But they did it while reaping substantial tax payer subsidys.

Somewhere I learned that they were given
HUGE tax incentives to invest in modernizing thier infrastucture. Instead they have neglected and uninspected rusty pipes, fire prone refinerys and delivery/supply problems.

As for paying taxes on those huge profits. What makes you think the mega corps have any accountability in paying taxes? How the heck would the IRS even stand a chance in gaining accountability?

Ray, do you have anything constructive to say for this thread?
If I thought it would be left unedited I would say it. Can you at least sign your invasions.
I don't know how others feel, but this appears to be taking license you don't have. The PM avenue is open to everyone and the Moderators have my email. As far as the subject matter of this thread many remarks are less than constructive not mention down right stupid. Thanks for caring.

That's not Exxon's fault. I am pretty sure we agree on this one.

I still think they (Big Oil whatever that is) are the current scapegoats for everything. Prior to them it was Big Tobacco. Most recently people are pulling Walmart into the mix and McDonald's too. Seeing what will stick. In this regard we truly are a victim waiting for a villain . . .

I still don't see anybody addressing the fact that exxon has not cleaned up their mess despite record profits.
I am waiting to hear the reason why that doesn't make them a bad company.

If you are referring to the Valdez spill, leaving 26,600 gallons (less than 3 truckloads) of oil, from an 11,000,000 gallon spill, hardly seems like "blowing it off".

Despite the environmental spin, perhaps the remaining oil is not causing any significant impact to the recovering area and cleaning it up may do more harm than good.

It does, however, help make them look evil, which seems to be important when a company makes a lot of money.
