F N R on my lower unit? REVISED

Okay, changed the impellar and housing all is/was going okay. Now I am stumped.

Mariner inline 6 1989 115hp

I can not find neutral at all. I have turned the driveshaft clockwise and played with the shifting gear shaft and no neutral. I did notice that the differance between FNR is very small and before I re-assemble is there a foolproof method. I just can not find neutral at all.

I have walked away from it for the evening and decided to consult the experts.

Sat morning... when the lower unit is in neutral is it a complete neutral?? I have neutral in the Forward direction (free spinning) however, if I turn the prop in reverse it seems to lock and want to turn the driveshaft? Am I on the right track ?

Bob, I assm them in reverse, because I think they are less likley to jump to anouther gear when assembling then turning the shift shaft to fwd gear the prop shaft locks up when turned in the reverses direction it must to drive the prop in the right rotation it seem wrong but thats the way it works- Bob

So let me know. When it's in Neutral the prop is not connected at all? There is so much movement in the shift shaft in the lower unit and the linkage that leads to it only turns a fraction.

Should I be turning both the driveshaft at the same time I am turning the shift shaft. I am still stumped?

When in neutral the prop is free and as you turn the shift shaft you will feel detents the first will be fwd and second neutral and third is rev. if you turn it much beond that point it will jump by and the shaft will have play back and forth and you will have to repeat the process over. Play with the shift a little and you will see what I am trying to explain--Bob

I got it!!

It was all because I was being gentle. Over the years I have learned not to force anything and the shift shaft was at the end of it's swing and I figured that was it. Well just a bit of pressure and click I am in neutral.

In my younger years I would have twisted the dam thing apart by bulling it.
