anyone watch the race at the weekend in australia good start to the season a ferrai in first and our own lewis hamilton in third although should have been a second but them at maclaren decided alsonso should have his pit stop to bring him out in front of lewis

Great start to the season. That was a great race. Actually I've only watched the DVD twice but it keeps looking pretty good.

Young Lewis looks to be the real deal. Makes me think of the best of Juan Pablo, my personal favorite. Hamilton may be my new favorite. (I'm kind of a McClaren guy) AND it looks like McClaren finally has a car that can stay glued together to the end of the race, which is nice. I'm going to withhold judgement on that issue until I've seen a couple more races.

I also like Kimi so it's kind of nice to watch Ferrari lead and not be bummed by it. (Maybe 'indifferent' would be a better term.) That could change, though. Nice to see him finally get a reliable car. IMO, he'd already have a WDC if he'd had a horse that didn't break down at odd moments.

I am literally holding my breath for the USGP. got my vacation set up and told my boss it's happening no matter what.

I agree i think kimi can bring that ferrai in for a championship win by the end of the season
although it would be nice to see a brit there for change and i think lewis could do it if like you say the car stays together.

Should have clarified, watched the DVD twice AFTER watching the race live. Got a rep to maintain you know.

Last fall when they announced McClaren was putting Lewis Hamilton in a seat I was like Lewis who? I really hadn't heard anything about him and was wondering if this was a throwaway. Guess not. Already seen enough to know this kid can drive for anybody. Kind of a pain for Alonso, I guess, to have a number 2 chasing your butt that hard. Great for us spectators though, don't you think?

Hmmmmm. Looked to me like it was Alonso chasing #2's butt for most of the race. I agree: Lewis Hamilton is the real thing. I think McLaren managed the pit stops to put Alonso in front.

Kimi Raikkonen has been my favorite driver for several years and should have won at least one championship. He was the fastest driver on the track. I think this will be Kimi's year

But McLaren/Mercedes is my team, and I think Mr. Hamilton is going to be my favorite driver and dark horse choice for a championship in his rookie year. Not to overlook Fernando Alonso, I just don't think he is good enough to beat Hamilton AND Raikkonen.

About Juan Pablo: A brilliant driver, but doesn't have the temperament for F1. Sort of like Mikka Haakinen.

Well, I don't like to put too much on a rookie's head after one race, but Hamilton is something else. As far as this F1 season goes, I plan to just sit back and enjoy.

I hated seeing Alonso leave Renault because I really thought he had a chance to build a Schumaker-type dynasty there but when the management went flaky he really had no choice.

Had he known then what he knows now, Montoya probably would have been better off staying with Williams from a strictly racing standppoint although he would never have gotten paid anything.

Again, it's just one race but it looks like Kimi has died and gone to heaven. Massa's ride from last starting place in the other car tells you most of what you need to know about Ferrari.

As to my man Juan Pablo, Juan's a Bubba. Colombian Bubba but Bubba nonetheless. He's gonna do just fine in NASCAR. Best thing that ever happened to him was that Tradin' Paint thing he did at Indy a few years ago with Jeff Gordon. Found out he kind of liked those taxicabs.

JB, you might want to think about a road trip to Indy in June. Great venue and incredibly relaxed. The South Americans I talk to are amazed that beyond the airfare, it really doesn't cost them much of anything at all.

Wow!!!

Did you see the way Lewis Hamilton took out those two Ferraris at the start of the race and then held them off for the first ten or so laps?

Truly incredible driving by such a newbie!

And the closing laps made for an exciting race..............just a pity the middle section was a bit same old, same old

Oh well, one week to go until the next one............

Lewis Hamilton may be a "newbie" to F1, but he is a seasoned race driver.

Mercedes has been grooming Lewis since he was about 11 and dominating kart races.

He is going to get a reputation for first corner passes on the start. That is twice he has done that in 2 races.

i agree Lewis did well under pressure with Kimi in his mirrors shame our other brit jenson not doing so well guess they not got that car sorted out , long way to go though i think Kimi will get his world championship this year IMO

I enjoy watching F1 as well. The Malaysian race was at 2:00 AM, which is way past my bedtime, but thankfully Speed Channel had a replay on at 3:30 pm ET.

I'm glad to see a competitive series, but the competition seems to be with McClaren and Ferrari. I'm a little surprised neither Honda or Toyota have seemed to work out their problems and be seriously competitive, and Renault seems to have dropped off a cliff with Alonso going to McClaren.

The championship it appears will be between Kimi and Fernando, and I have no idea who will ultimately prevail.

The Honda and Renault have seemed to be left behind i agree
I think though if Lewis keeps his head and car stays reliable he may be in the running on the championship

Hamilton has talent, no question, but Alonso left him in his dust, and Kimi would have passed him as well given a couple more laps.

I agree JB, Lewis has been groomed for this for a long time and he's certainly going to make Ron Dennis very happy if he keeps developing the way he has started in this formula.

I could be way off the mark here but I felt there were shades of Ayrton Senna in his start?

I'm not so sure Kimi will find the championship all his own this year: Alonso towards the end of the race was still punching in faster lap times than Kimi and it certainly looked like Kimi was trying hard, especially as the team knew that the engine didn't have to last for another race.

I do like the fact that things are wide open in the title race.

I think the most worrying statement of the race came from David Coulthard when talking about having to retire from the race: due to the fact that the steering column was fouling his brake pedal Now that's the sort of thing that really should have been sorted out over winter testing...........or am I wrong?
