Hi guys, I'm looking for a little help with my motor here. I have a 02 f115 I bought used about a year ago. When I winterized it last year I noticed the number 1 plug was black after maybe 5 or 6 hours run time. I posted about it here and rodbolt said to check the injector. A few weeks ago I took it to the local dealer to have the 100 hr. service done (unsure of actual hours,ECM was changed due to an issue with making oil and original owner didn't seem to be much for maintenance) and have the injector checked. The mechanic said everything checked out fine but when I asked him about the injector he said they did a fuel pressure test and everything was good, both running and with just the ignition on. I don't think this is what was meant by checking the injector. Is there some other test that needs to be done? Is there something I can do myself like cleaning maybe? One other question, I ran the motor hot last year with the muffs on and fried the water pump but the overheat alarm never went off. I had him check this also and he said he had to buy a resistor to put in line to check the alarm and after 1 minute the alarm went off. He says this is normal because there is a delay in the alarm system, does this make sense or do I need a new mechanic? I'm sorry about the long post but I wanted to give as much background as possible. I need this motor to last me a long time and want to keep on top of it.
Thanks for the help,
Scott

Re: f115 questions

yes the alarm system is funny, it reqires a resistor in the temp sensor circuit to fool the ECU.
the injector test can really only be done by a shop set up for it. I send all mine to flagship marine. they send me back the injectors with a before and after flow chart.
it could also be a misadjusted throttle valve which can only be set with a techmate or similar manometer.

Re: f115 questions

It's possible to check for a leaky injector by watching the fuel pressure after the motor is shut off. It'll bleed down over time, but if it leaks down within seconds or minutes, there may be a stuck injector. If pressure holds steady or loses pressure over several minutes to hours, then I'd assume that they are okay. But the only way to know for sure is to remove it and test it. Few shops have that capacity. Or you could swap it with another injector and see if the problem moves to that cylinder.

Re: f115 questions

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the replies. It's all good info. Unless I hear different I will try to switch the injectors, that should be an easy way to narrow it down. I've been doing what I can to keep this motor healthy.I installed a Racor filter after doing some searching on this site and reading about the benefits of having one. Now I found a few threads about running ringfree in with the gas to help seat the rings and keep the carbon buildup down. Can I run this with the fuel conditioner that is already in the tank from winter or do I need to run that fuel out first?
Thanks again, It's really nice to have people as knowledgeble as yourselves that are willing to take the time to help a novice.
Scott

Re: f115 questions

it takes 5 min to remove the injectors, ten minutes to box them, flagship does a 24hr turn around.

Re: f115 questions

Rodbolt, would a dummy like me be able to read the flow chart and know if it is bad or not, or do they tell you it needs replaced? Any idea of the cost? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get all my ducks in a row.
Scott

I haven't used Flagship, but assume they tell you if it is bad. We use Tony Brucatto and his chart tells you this. The cost is nominal. We send them all and they comeback with a list showing which cylinder he reccomends reinstalling them in due to flow. Shipping and all for a set of six is less than $100.00.
Primarily a mercury thing with us on them (drag motors) and he sells the replacement ones when needed for much less than Mercury.

Re: f115 questions

yep what ray says.
flagship charges 27 dollars each for cleaning and testing, you get a flow chart for each injector before and after cleaning. if the orings dont get damaged then oil and reuse them.
new they are close to 200 bucks a pop.

Thanks for the help guys, I REALLY appreciate it. Do you think I should send them all in or just the one in question? the other 3 plugs are burning perfect, nice light tan color.
Thanks, Scott
