Changing the water pump on my dad's 2003 f115 four stroke today. Rodbolt, I did a search on your posts and could not find the one with "lifting the shaft while seating the collar". Can u elaborate a little please or direct me to some tips u gave on changing this pump. Much appreciated, Dave

Re: F115 Water Pump change

I recommend you get the collar and plastic bushing listed on another post. HEADS UP. They are not included in the kit. According to the manual it is a matter of having someone pull up on the shaft while you use a suitable tool to seat the collar and plastic bushing, in my case it was an open end wrench and plastic hammer. Probably has something to do with pre loading in the gear box. FRED

Re: F115 Water Pump change

ok, its been a long time since I posted it so Ill do it again.
this pertains to all V4,V6 and F100 and larger 4 strokes, maybe some of the smaller 4 strokes as well since 1995.
dissconect the speedo hose if applicable.
remove 7 bolts holding the lower unit in place,8 on 3.1L and larger.
remove the case with the shifter in Nuetral.
place the lower on a suitable stand.
remove the 4 water pump bolts, remove the housing leaving the insert cup on the impeller. if the cup stays with the housing remove it and reinstall it on the impeller turning the drive shaft CW.
look closly at the plastic collar, you will see a split line.
using 2 screw drivers 90* from the split line carefully rotate the tips between the plastic and the ring.
the object is to keep the plastic from rising while the ring is coming off,
occasionally you get a stubborn one and then I simply cut it off with a chesiel.
parts are like 8 dollars, at 80 dollars an hour I wont play with it long.
next remove the impellor and the two flat washers and one wave washer.
then using a dulled chesiel remove the woodruff key. place the chesiel parallel with the shaft and drive the key down and out.
remove the plate and gasket.
remove the oil slinger from the upper bearing housing. carefully inspect the seals and garter spring.
remove the rubber dam and holder, clean corroded pocket as nessasary.
install the slinger and rubber dam, install the gasket and plate, install the woodruff key using a brass or Aluminium drift, install the impeller on the shaft, lubricate with dishwashing liquid.
place one flat washer, then the wave washer then the next flat washer down the shaft, slide the plastic collar down the shaft, top it with the metal lock collar.
A good tool to seat the collar is the aft prop spacer :).
while pulling up on the driveshaft tap the collar in place.
now flip the pump housing over, install the small oring, install the cup making sure the alinment tab is seated.
grease the oring groove and install the oring in the groove.
now install the housing push it down while rotating the shaft clockwise, install the pump bolts.
install the gear case.
see how simple it is?
takes about 45 minutes if saltwater corrosion isnt an issue.

Re: F115 Water Pump change

Thanks for the help guys, I had to replace the plastic collar (4$) as I broke it while taking it off. Unfortunately we were not able to remove the key so we didn't replace the gasket and plate. I hope this doesn't come back to hurt us but after beating on it for a bit we decided to leave it. Ran the engine for about 5 hours so far and all is well. Thanks again for your help!!! Dave
