Well it's time to replace the Ol Ranger it's pushing 270,000. I'm looking at a 3.0L Ranger or a F150 with either the 4.2L V6 or 4.6L V8. Anyone have a F150 with any of these motors? If so what kind of fuel milege do you get and have you had any mechnical problems? This will be my daily driver so fuel economy is important. I will not be using it for towing the boat, That's what my F250HD and F350 diesel are for.

I've already decided:
Chevy - I hate the new look
GMC - might consider
Dodge - NEVER

Re: F150 fuel economy?

I have put 120000 miles on two F150's and I am up to 113000 on the third, it is a 99..........A buddy of mine bought the other two, he drives one, his son the other....they now have about 250000 on them, (a 96 and a 98) ......all three are daily drivers....nary a problem. Fuel economy? I have never really checked them, my company buys the gas.....but I would venture to say between 15 and 18 mpg....all have the 4.2 V6 and auto trans. I like Fords! Have had chevy trucks too, just didnt like the soft ride. Never had a Dodge, but sure wish I still had my Jeep J10!

Re: F150 fuel economy?

I have a 2006 Ford F150 STX with a 4.2L here, I have had it 1 year nearly to date. I only get 16 miles per Gallon tops at the moment but I only have 8,800
miles on it. My cousin has an XL 2006 Ford F150 with a 4.2L in his same color and he claimed that once it broke 10,000 miles on the motor the gas milage started getting better. He claimed that the motor doesn't get broke in until after 10,000 miles on the motor, don't know how true this is.

I have owned a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT with a 4 banger in it, I swapped it for a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge that had a V6. Then last December I swapped the Ranger Edge in on the F150, after they sent me a letter in the mail saying if you come in within these certain days we will pay your Ranger Edge off no matter how much you owe on it. Well I took the letter down to them and came home with the F150 that I am satisfied with. It is the large cab, not the crew cab. But it has room for storage behind the driver's and passenger's seat, and you can lean the seats back pretty far, I like that, I got tired of sitting up straight expecially when just sitting in my truck durring break at work. I have also towed a John Deere 650 tractor behind it on a trailer without any problems. The F150 doesn't have electric windows and didn't have electric/keyless entry, I had the keyless entry added on and I plan on have eletric windows put in it later on down the road. The STX style does not have carpet in it, that is another thing that I liked about it.

Re: F150 fuel economy?

My 4.2L V6 F150 has been very reliable from day one, i used to get approx 18 to 20 MPG, however i now get around 15 to 16 MPG.
I thought that was because it is now 7 years old with 154k miles, but my service rep said that it's not a problem with the vehicle, it's more to do with the blend of gas. :(

Re: F150 fuel economy?

I was getting around 22mpg on the Ranger but motor is getting tired and it has droped to around 20mpg. My Ranger has been through hell and back several times and it shows. The kids are embarrassted to be seen in it. But people do give me a wide berth when i'm on the road.

Jim, whats the acceleration with the 4.2L?

Re: F150 fuel economy?

Bucky.....with out a load it is fast enough to hit 75 before you know it....cruising at 70, it still has enough to get around traffic with no problem, the biggest load I have had in it was 8 9 foot railroad ties,(takes two guys to pick up a 9 foot RR tie) set the back end down almost to the spring stops, and still had plenty of acceleration, both of my boats are aluminum....so no problems there. This is the 99, the other two never saw a load other than the boats. it is also the 4 door model, not the full size back seat, but the extended cab.

Re: F150 fuel economy?

Thanks Jim, I usualy do about 75, which meens I'm 10 to 15 mph slower than the rest of the traffic here in SoCal, lol. I do want to be able to get on the freeway doing at least 70 if I can. Like I said my loads are light. I have other trucks for the heavy hauling.
