I have a 2005 F150 and bought a Yamaha Water Temperature gauge.

The sensor is a brass, threaded bolt with 2 wires that go to the gauge.

Can some one tell me which bolt I am supposed to take out of the engine and replace with the sendor/sensor?

The wiring installation intructions are very good except all they have is an arrow pointing at the engine block for where the sensor goes.

Sure would appeciate any help. Other than where to screw in this sensor, I have everything installed.

Thanks

I thought this was the Yamaha OuTboard forum.
I am not talking about a Ford Truck.

The F150 is what Yamaha's 4 stroke 150 HP outboard is called.

Adam one
look on your block in the location of the arrow. you should see a 14mm hex plug with a red washer. that will be the spot. I dont have one here at home so I cant describe it better but the hole is there and threaded then plugged, its the same style all V and four strokes use.
it will look like a shiney bolthead with a red washer.

Rodbolt,
Same for the FT60B? Really keen to install a water temp gauge as Sydney Harbour gets full of plastic bags after a rain storm and I'm relying on the warning buzzer which can't be good. Your advice appreciated.

TritonII
pretty much
I would rely on the buzzer more than the gauge. in my opinion gauges are usless. to many times people look at them and go "man, I wonder how long its been pegged".
so even with a gauge keep the buzzer maint done and test it periodically

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

Thanks Rodbolt. Know what you mean about gauges but used in conjunction with the buzzer it should be a benefit. By the way, is there a test you can do with the buzzer other than blocking the inlet on the lower leg to induce an overheat... which can't be good for the engine?

Do you mean the arrow that is in the directions for the gauge? It has 4 pictures. 3 are for the under 100 HP and the other one is for V4/V6's.

The F150 is an inline 4 cylinder.

I see 3 shiney bolt heads on the port side of the engine and all 3 have a red washer.

If there were one bolt, I would have tried it but Not too keen on taking a bolt out that I have no idea what it is for when there are 4 of them.

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

redstone
can you post a pic of the instructions? I dont have the 2005 rigging guide here at home and forgot to look at it. those shiny bolts are water blockoffs. the ones above the coils are on the cyl head not the block. but I will try to remember to look at the rigging guide.

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

redstone
I did have it.
its on page 5-38 of the 2004 marine technical guide. it shows the tempreture sender for a gauge to be installed in the plug that is beside the water cover zinc on the exhaust cover. this is the shiney one with the red washer just below and slightly aft of the voltage regulator and just above and slightly aft of the zinc holder.

Thanks to rodbolt, here is the location of the bolt one removes to put in the temp or the pressure sensor.

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

hello
the black box above and aft of the oil filter is the regulator/rectifier assy. the one with 2 red wires and 3 green wires.
the zinc or (anode) holder is the shiny double bolted thingy. the 10mm head holds the zinc and the 12mm bolt holds the assy to the block.
the bolt with a red washer just aft and below the regulator assy is where the temp sender goes. no need to go funky :) the cyl head aft has 2 zincs also. they must be cleaned off or replaced periodically. dont forget them.

Thanks for all your help.

Also the heads up on the zincs as the engine user's manual makes no mention of them.

I like to do all the regular maintenance items myself. Boat only goes to the dealer when it is beyond simple maintenance.

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

rodbolt,
I really wanted a Temp gauge and a Pressure gauge but there is only that one connection.

Do you know any tricks or other bolts were one could mount a Temp sensor?

Why both?
This is my first Outboard coming from 4 previous I/O's and I am a fanatic about making sure the engine is warmed up before 'hammering' it.
That is why I want the Temp gauge.

The Pressure gauge is obvious.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: F150 Temperature sender location

Hey Rodbolt and Redstone,
When you mention "Zincs" or anode holders, how do you clean them? Like Redstone says, there is no mention of them in the owner's manual... just as there is no mention in the manual for periodic checking of the water pump or lower leg seals. This lack of information makes me think I should get a workshop manual... or is it also short on maintenance information? Sorry to be a pain but I want my little 60 to last at least ten years.
