F25TLRX Starter problem?

I have a 1999 Yamaha F25. Lately, I have been experiencing difficulty in starting. Using a fully charged battery, the engine is not turning over enough to start. Hooking a charger up and setting it to start engine mode will usually provide enough extra umph to get it going. Is this indicative a a problem with the starter? If so, is it necessary to replace the starter, or is it an item that can be repaired?

Thanks,
Rick

There is a small chance that you have a starter problem, but a big chance that you have a problem with the wiring for the starter circuit.

Take the battery cables and the wire from the solenoid (if any) to the starter. . . all those BIG wires. . .off and carefully clean both ends. Then inspect them for weak (corroded) spots before you reconnect. Worst offender is where the battery ground lead connects to the engine block.

Let us know the result. Good luck. :)

Capt. JB,

I did as you suggested and initially got results. At least on the first crank she spun just like she should have, but did not start. A couple of more tries and then it quit altogether. A fully charged battery will now not even raise the motor out of the water. I'm thinking I must have smoked something in there. Any ideas? Oh, by the way, its a 2002 F25TRLA - not a 1999 F25TRLX - old brain cells not functioning properly I guess.

Thanks

Check that battery ground cable for internal corrosion, Rick. You can just run a jumper cable from the battery - post to the engine block. If the starter takes off okay then you have a bad cable.

You nailed it, Capt. J.B.!! Started right up like a champ. I'm assuming it's best to buy the proper Yamaha wiring harness rather than heading to West Marine. Would that be your advise?
Gratefully,
Rick
