FACT OR FICTION?

I have a 1976 115 hp merc, that has been boggin down real bad on the hole shot, and gettign 6k rpms @ WOT this motor is on a 17' glass bass boat. I had suspected, the prop, hull desing, motor hieght, and all sorts of stuff. I too kthe boat to the shop, the tech told me that some water had gotten into the gas tank, and inturn got into the carbs and the engine, he siad the was the cuase of my problems, not sure if he cleaned the carbs or not, but he did say that he cleaned the water out. the charge is around $200.00 I haven't had a chance to take the boat out ot test and see if this helped th problem.<br /><br />my question is could this had been the cuase of my problems, the bogging down I understand, but the high rpms? I don't get that. and is this a fiar price to pay for the work done?<br /><br /> Please do not take offense by this post, I simply want to gain trust from this tech, and since i'm completly ignorant, I wanted a2nd opinion..<br /><br /> thank,<br /> Thomas

boater,<br /><br />Sure will. Water in the fuel will cause exactly what you experienced.<br /><br />You may have had other carb. problems also.

Put that bad boy in the water and check it out............ If it runs great, then that $200.00 was well worth it.

Thanks guys I feel much better now. any one care to explain why water will cuase 6000 + rpms? I just don't get it<br /> also what toher problems couls stem form this water being in th gas, don't know how long it has been that way.<br /><br /> Thomas

I am not sure? Why would the water only effect the hole shot and not the WOT?<br />Test it and if it does not work its back to the shop.

what is the typical protocol for this type of thing, I understand that boats act totallly diffrent in and out of the water, so If I test it and it didn't fix the problem, should I not expect to pay for more repairs, or what. NOt sure how this normally works with boats, I knwo with my truck if I carry it in and say that it wont turn to the right if they do some work and it doesn't fix the problem I tend to carry it back to have it worked up free of charge, is this to be expected in marine products also?<br /><br /> Thanks,<br /> THomas

My bet would be on the motor having the same problem when you take it out. Boy am I pesimistic. I hope you have better luck than I have on old motors with that type of problem. Bogging down.

He may have cured the bogging, but the over-revving is caused by one of the four things you allready looked-into (prop hub, wrong prop, trim, hull dent or other bubble-maker in the way of the prop).<br /><br />I would do what BushCat sugjested, and 'put the bad boy in the water, and check it out'.<br />But first, get either some touch-up paint,or white or silver nail polish, and paint a thin line from the prop nut all the way to the outer hub, and let it dry.<br />When you get back, check it, and see if the line moved. If so, have the prop rehubbed, even if it has just been re-hubbed, because it wasn't done right. This is a very common problem.
