I have a 1989 100hp johnson 2 stroke that i am starting to get some problems with and have been thinking about repowering next year with a 150hp evinrude etech but a couple different people are telling me that in 2010 New York state is going to ban the sale of 2stroke motors. Has anybody else heard this rumor?

That old wives tale pops up all the time. Ask them where they got their info. I'll bet they "heard" it somewhere. Some lakes or other bodies of water don't allow the use of old technology but do allow E-Tec since they're actually cleaner burning than a 4 stroke. Lake Tahoe for one.

DFI (direct fuel injection) two strokes are allowed. It is the carbureted and EFI two strokes that are being looked at in these bans. Just wait until catalytic converters get added for even more weight on the four strokes.

I suspect that if "bans" occur they will be primarily as to the sale of new motors and not the use or possession of old ones, although some lakes will put in restrictions just as they restrict horsepower.
Q: if they allow 9.9 2 stroke why not a 20 4 stroke, if the latter makes half as much pollution?

I think the 9.9 motors were produced mainly for lakes with a limited hp ruling.
Don't really think even with the less polluting 4 strokes it would effectively be allowed under some of the "laws" on those particular bodies of water.
Then again, what the hell do I know ???

If you mean 4 cycle (aka 4 stroke), there's already 4 cycle weed whackers. Not too bad. A little heavier. The one I have is a little harder to start than my old 2 stroke weed whacker, but that could be the brand or just that I haven't figured it out yet.

haven't seen a 4 stroke chainsaw though, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
