Fair asking price on E-Tec Motor

I am in the process of repowering my boat. I currently have a 1995 175 Johnson Ocean Runner. I have had some problems with starting the engine after it has cooled off. It has run fine the last several times, but i expect to have to use starter fluid to start it before too long. So, I made the decision to go see my local E-Tec dealer.
My question would be what would be a fair price for me to throw out there for a brand new still in the crate 2008 175 E-Tec? It is a regular motor not a HO. Also, what would be a fair trade in price on my old motor. I am thinking of trading in a 2007 Yamaha 25 as well. I will get the 5 year waranty, all the rigging, SS prop, tac, oil tank, controls, and cables free as part of the promo offer.
Should he be asking the same price as a new 2012?

why would you want to get rid of that great motor??? the motor you have is well worth some maintenance and should last you many more years. do not use starter fluid. if it is not cranking good, check compression, spark, injection system, if all checks out, replace the intake manifold gasket as it has passages for the injection pump and they do sometimes swell shut...I would way rather have that 1995 motor anyday. your motor if it is the 60 degree OIS, in good condition should sell for $2500 (+- $500). The e-tec I have no idea, I do not want one at any price..take a look at the price of the parts..way too many of them over $1K for my taste..and I can repair/maintain my carbed engine just fine without having to put it in a shop and wait 6 weeks for a $2000-5000 bill.

on the other hand... he is not seeking for help in decision finding but the price of an etec. many guys are loving the old carbed 2 strokes, but time is moving on and an etec will surely be a superb engine in comparision to an old carbed johnson. with full warranty the repair costs are of course not an issue for 5 years- the better fuel economy is an issue every day.

i think the dealer can never ask the price of an 2012 model, at least 25% off and with all the additional stuff for "free" . its of course always a trade when he takes your old outboard in charge .

I went through all that repair stuff last season and spend over 1k olny to have a motor that I can not rely on. You don't have much when you have a outboard you can not rely on. I think the only thing that was suggested that was not done was replacing the intake manafold gaskets.

right, like said expect a 25 % trade off and enjoy an etec you can rely on, don,t listen to the old school low budget carb lovers :facepalm:

Just my 2c as I have recently priced a new 175 Etec. New with the 5 yr warranty, prop, controlls and harness was about 14,000. Then you need to pay an authorized Evinrude dealer to install it for you I was given a 15,000. total . Then tax on top of that. Buying a new in the crate left over you will get a three year warranty when installed by an authorized dealer. You will need to purchase a harness adapter for about $150. as the harness is different after 1995. I have a 1995 Ocean Runner also and it has been a great motor for me until a few weeks agao when I lost two cylinders. I am having mine rebuilt but if I could afford it a new Etec is the way to go. Maintainence free for either 3 or 5 years and the fuel savings are great.I run 10 to 50 miles offshore when the pelagics are here. meaning the fuel savings would make the decision by themselves. Probably trade the old carb model for the rigging and harness. Sell the Yammy yourself for about 1500. or better. Offer between 10,000. and 11,000. on the 2008. If you can afford it get the Etec. One last thing. If you can find a motor out of state you will save on sales tax but pay for shipping. Shipping is a lot cheaper than sales tax in most cases. Have it shipped to uncle Joe over the state line.

I was just commenting on what I thought may be helpful.. those 60 degree loopers are great motors, mine have always cranked dependably and ran very well, not as smooth as an e-tec maybe, and the gas savings is ok, around %10-40 maybe, depending, I have heard reports of almost double fuel mileage. But I have mostly heard that at WOT there is not a big difference, biggest MPG improvement is in the idle and mid range RPMs. I had a 2003 4 stroke yammy, did not notice a big differnce from my 1999 johnson 60 degree looper with same 115 HP, except the 2 stoke would out run the 4 stroke and was about 100 LBS lighter.

I am confident that as long as his compression, spark and timing are all good he is having a fuel issue that could be resolved easily. however if he is not a DIYer it may be better to go with the e-tec. but even though I think he would probably get good service out of it, I have heard a few horror stories of people missing a whole summer while their motor was being repaired under warranty..and there are some cases where they will not honor the warranty and you will have to pay, if so you will find out just how big an outboard repair bill can get. normal repair bills on EFI motors run around $2500 and can get much higher, and I am not talking about rebuilding them, just replacing the computer or HP fuel pump, or one of the many other $1k + parts.

not to mention EFI outboards are having a hard time with this ethanol fuel, it leaves a white powdery residue that clogs the injectors and causes a lean condition to burn a hole in a piston. this is not that uncommon. Just my thoughts.. in the end ES should do what he thinks is best, but the more information he has the better decision he can make, thats why we post in the forums, to find a different way of looking at our situation that may help us to see more clearly.

If you are anywhere near Savannah GA, I will give you $1500 for your motor if it will pass compression test.
