Fair Payment Question

I need some help determining what is fair payment.I lost the trim tilt motor in my boat. My marina replaced it only to have the second one burn up in the same fashion. They are now installing the third motor. I asked them to cut me a deal on the motor as the second one burned up a week after they installed it. The manager of the marina basically told me it wasnt thier fault and that he would not cut me a deal. At this point they still have not found the cause and have installed a fuse in the line to prevent damage to the third motor.

I really think this is a raw deal and would appreciate input from anyone that can help.

Re: Fair Payment Question

My #1 rule. If something failed, FIND THE REASON! If you don't, it'll happen again. In Australia we have a piece of government legislation called the "Trade Practices Act". If that happened here, the law says you get a new one!

Chris.........

Fair payment would be $0, and take your boat to a different shop.

Too many places aren't thourough, and treat the symptom, not the cause.

Re: Fair Payment Question

Thanks for the responses. I think I may put a call in to the owner if this manager refuses.

Re: Fair Payment Question

touchy problem.you brought your boat..say to me.The tilt motor was bad.Thats # 1 motor.I replaced it,and it went up and down several times for me.You used the boat and
it worked for you.Now its burnt another motor, and you brought it back to me.Thats #2 motor. Now we know there is a probem in the boat, burning out the motor.
Now I have to install motor #3 and find out
why.And it seems you want me to absorb the cost.
I can work with you,but how far do you think I should/can go?

Re: Fair Payment Question

Seems like number 2 would have been the time to find out what's going on and there would be no number 3 to argue about.

EDIT: DHP. No offence intended, but I think number 3 should be on the house..

DHPMARINE,

As a professional mechanic, weren't you trained to find the cause of a problem when fixing it?

Re: Fair Payment Question

After #2 motor it should be $0 unless the boat owner is doing something unknown (has the exact cause been established?).

In respect to goodwill, one unhappy customer tells everyone, one happy customer tells 2 or 3 people if your lucky. If it was my workshop, I would have cut a deal without hesitation.

Aldo

Re: Fair Payment Question

I was never trained as a professional mechanic.

rckdb1boat number 3 is now on the motor. Now it can be diagnosed.I think one of the trim /tilt swiches is shorting out.But the issue is who buys three trim motors.

Re: Fair Payment Question

It' a close call on the first one. Because he did have the Marina replace it and they should have made sure there were no other problems that caused the failure. So that would lead us to number 2. They had to replace it for whatever reason, but then for sure they should have found the cause of the problem at this point. Number 3 should be their responsibility for not taking the time to find the cause..

Re: Fair Payment Question

The right answer is that they should have found what caused the problem. But then, who is to say they didn't check all that could be checked, found nothing, and installed the new motor. Once it leaves their shop, who knows what happened. Yeah, it should have lasted longer, but the possibility exists that the problem is owner induced and that is why they don't want to eat it. What they should do is work the problem, and if they can show it was a defective motor or install, its on them. If they can show that it is an owner related problem, then its on the owner. This is why I don't fix things for people any more, too many variables.

That's right on Jason. I can't imagine what the owner could have done to the motor to make it fail that fast, but right is right...

Re: Fair Payment Question

in my young opinion, #3 should be on either the marina, or the motor manufacturer.

What ever happened to Warranty work

Re: Fair Payment Question

Hi All!
I just reread all of this and I think tilt motor number 1 is the original motor, number 2 is the FIRST replacement the shop put in ,number 3 is the one now installed, and needs more trouble shooting to find the cause. So the shop is dealing with the ONLY tilt motor they put in.
DHP

Re: Fair Payment Question

And asking the customer to pay for the second one they put in after not finding the cause of the problem!
