I'm looking for an outboard for my MacGregor 25. I've been offered an Evinrude 9.5 long shaft 1969 Model 9922S for $419. It seems in good shape.

Is this a fair deal? Anything in particular I should look for when testing it? Will I be able to get parts for it?

Thanks in advance!

the 9.5 was not one of OMC, brightest moments, it's OK, but harder to work on than the 9.9. parts here:"http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=47de9a677f9fcd7c16c0076f4bb6a6c6"

check the coils, inspection plate on flywheel, for discoloration and cracks, lower unit for water in oil, compression, and service the water pump, unless recently done.

If at all possible, take it for a test run ON A BOAT!! If it won't run right with the hood on, it may have serious trouble. You cannot test for this in a barrel. Another common problem with the 9.5 is broken motor mounts. Grab hold of the flywheel (not running, duh) and see if you can push/pull the whole powerhead fore and aft. A bit of movement in the rubber mounts is normal, but gross fore and aft flopping around in there is serious trouble. For the asking price, a boat test is not an unreasonable request. Unless the lake is frozen.

To me, $419 is high for a '69 9.5. As the 9.5's are hard to work on and parts are a tad hard to find. In my area (up north) the 9.9's start in the low $500 range and they have a much higher resale and fixability then the 9.5.

If it was in above average condition, then maybe. Meaning good compression and new coils and impeller.

I have also sailed and have had small kickers for such and the ones that work well are the Yachtwin series that OMC put out. I have a 8hp off my old 20' Paceship sailboat.

One thing to worry about on the 9.5 is that the pull start is low and trying to pull it while hanging off the back of a sailboat is not easy. The yachtwins made it so that you could pull up at an angle and it worked well. It's something to consider.

Also, the long shaft 9.5's are very rare, not that that's a bad thing, just rare. The whole idea behind them when they came out was their low profile to fish over so a long shaft is un common.

I do not think that what you were offered is a long shaft. Both the serial # and the picture show a short shaft.
This outboard still has the old 18 inch short shaft instead od the 15 inch short that is common today.
The extension is 5 inch and it would make the long shaft 23 inches.

I was wondering about that shaft length also, but as the 9.5's are so weird I figured that maybe the 5" extension was under the housing and not visible so I did not comment on it.

That's a regular shaft 9.5. One of the best engines I have ever owned. I had one as a teenager 35 years ago. I'm sure you know how a teen treats and drives anything. I could not destroy that thing. I bought one from ebay last year for 200.00. It runs as new. The owner would not ship it and that was the only reason I got it for that price. 350.00 would be reasonable for that, and I was gladly willing to pay that for the one I got.

No matter what you pay, it will serve you well.
