Re: Falling gas prices..........

This will probably get me banned for life, but . . . How are those of you that said that gas was not a fairly traded commoditiy, that the price would never go back down, that evil oil companies had a monopoly, and that they need to be regulated, rationalising those comments now?

I am not picking a fight, but I always wonder about the subsequent thought process. They were evil, now they're not? They were screwing me, now they just feel bad so they stopped? I was wrong? Nahhhhhhh . . .

Where Haut when you need him? ;):D

here in newfoundland canada right now, gas is at 95 cents a litre, which equals 3.56 per u.s. gallon. lol. and the prices are down. they peaked out at around 1.60 per litre over the summer. that's $6.05 a u.s. gallon.

Now, since our dollar is at an all time low, is this the price you were paying a couple of years ago.

the canadian dollar now is worth around .80 cents american. a couple years ago, the dollar was around the same but the price of oil was just as low. our gas prices were probably as the are now, in the 90-95 cent area. over this pass summer our dollar was actually the highest in years, around 1.07. i buy a lot of stuff on ebay and at bass pro shops, so i love this. but now i have to cut back a bit because of the 80 cent range.

I agree 100%.

I work in the oilfield. Sad part is, projects are being put on hold every day. In about 2 years, oils will jump back up to $150 because of all the projects put on hold. These price swings are killing us in the oil business.

Trust me guys, every person in the oildfield would much rather have 60-80 dollar oil continously. That way we can budget accordingly.

Here on the west coast, in WA. I last paid 1.99 a gallon last Friday Dec 5, today it was 1.85 at the same place. In the big city of Aberdeen, it's down to 1.75 at one place.
Was talking to a friend in Ketchikan AK, the price is still in the 3.70 range.

Again, we're letting foreign entities influence our everyday lives. The foreign "implants" effect our wages as far as the auto unions go. Not saying that is bad-just reality.

We CAN control this by becoming energy solvent, within this country, Anwar and the Gulf of Mexico are just two "stop gap" examples. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF OIL. We've got buckets of it. We just can't get to it (Green Groups) and we can't refine it (capacity).

We can have cheap energy, if we want it. By allowing us to have that current energy, it fuels the discovery of other sources-IF that is the way we decide to go,

We CANNOT shut off one without "workable" alternative(s).

It's a "transition" not a mandate. Governments only understand the latter.

Well, if you can't get to it and you can't refine it, does it really matter that it's there?

No, there is no shortage of oil. I would say that a barrel of oil is traded at about 60 dollars a barrel. That was what my financial adviser told me was considered "normal." It went from being WAY overpriced at 145 to underpriced at 45. I believe we will soon be back to about 2 dollars a gallon and about 60 dollars a barrel. That makes the oil companies happy and keeps the public quiet.

This price drop, however, PROVES WITHOUT A DOUBT that everyone on this forum who was fussing at the oil companies saying that they set the price of gas was flat out WRONG. It was, as I said, speculators and a false sense of urgency and supply that caused the price gouging. But it was done on the world market, certainly not only in the US and not by the oil companies.

You can't really compare gasoline cost to the consumer between the U.S. and Canada, without considering taxes and exchange rate. In Canada, you pay a national sales tax of 10 cents per gallon, plus in New Foundland, you pay the highest Provincial tax in your country. In total you pay 39.9% in taxes in NF. That means at 3.56 per gallon, you are paying about 1.42 in taxes, or 2.14 for the basic commodity. Considering exchange rate, you would pay about 1.71 per gallon in U.S. Dollars.

Across Canada, gasoline is averaging about 79 cents per litre or 3.06 per gallon. Since gasoline taxes in Canada as a whole are about 32% of the pump price, Canadians in general pay about 98 cents in taxes and about 2.08 for the basic commodity. Converted to U.S. dollars, that is about $1.66 per gallon.

Average U.S. price per gallon of "regular" is now is about $1.70, with about 47 cents per gallon in taxes. That makes our average, basic commodity cost $1.23/gallon.

Yup, your paying more, but not as much as a simple comparison of price would suggest.
