Re: False Economy....

I live north of Boston, We have jobs, we have work, we have plenty of oppurtunity. The economy is just weeding out all the people who somehow assumed they were really worth the $70,000.00 salary for doing and knowing little to nothing. Get an education, get a trade and get to work ! The working class is still fueling this country and this economy !!!!!
Peace out, Gary

I'm south of Boston,
I was told " if you resent the rich folk, don't worry about it, you'll never be one".

there is a bit of snobbishness around boats but thats just people comparing their insides to others peoples outsides.

I've become snobbish with my boat, its a 1974 absolute peice of crap , still, when I see people surfcasting I yell "get a job". :D

I'm still ok right?

Re: False Economy....

I'm not talking about unsafe operation or non functioning equipment. No one should put themselves or their passengers in jeopardy or jeopardize the safety of others assisting them because there vessel is unsafe.

Having minimum required safety equipment and an old beater boat operated responsibly should not be viewed as inferior behavior. It's whats legally required.

Yea maybe the guys boat had problems but it seems like the poster looked and expected to see problems from the boater before the hull was wet all judged on the look of his rig.

I don't think we should consider them less safe because of what they drive, how their trailer looks or the amount of moss on deck. If the motor runs, the bilge pump and lights work and you've got the coast guard safety kit an PFD's on board I say lets go boating :)

Maybe I'm just over-reacting. My wife says I do it all the time :)

(I edited out a bunch of stuff from the quote)

I think you still missed the point of the OP. It wasn't that the guy had a beater boat that was the problem. The problem was that the guy had a UNSAFE, ILL-MAINTAINED beater boat because he spent the money on a large screen TV for it instead of for required safety equipment (Like a blower that actually worked)

I didn't see the OP as being snobbish at all. I saw him as being emminently sensible.

I am a budget boater. I can see how people get stupid over all of the toys. I can't see risking your family's safety over a t.v. You're on a boat, not in your living room. make sure the boat is safe, and enjoy the scenery around you. Watch out for other boats, not the 17 minutes of commercials and 4 minutes of program. you want to see your show? fine! buy a tivo. just leave the tivo at home.

also...vintage. i will never look down on them, i'd love to see them

learning curve...amen

dirty old man...god bless ya for not bowing to the god television. 300 channels, nothing to watch

skargo...MY MAN!!!! my old tub and 4x are about the same, going out of business sale at boater's world was a blessing, and, i think there are more of us here than Biff and his wife Muffy types with big boats and small, um well,...nevermind

Right on jakebrake. I was just out for about 4 hours today, and I waved at this one couple in a brand new something or other, they both turned their heads the other way. I just laughed and had a blast.

Poor people like boating too!!

Man I see some boating snobs on this site. From the gee your trucks a beater and your boat has moss on it to the my crew of 8 all wear $200.00 inflatable life vests 100% of the time and you should too crowd.

Boating is an activity that everyone tries to enjoy at every level. If you think your enjoying boating more or a better boater because you have $10,000 worth of accessories and the other guy has minimum equipment in his Gahnoo your wrong.

Access is getting tougher and tougher on us all, our disposable income is shrinking faster than my willy in an ice water pond.

Lets exercise some tolerance on the less fortunate boaters out there. They all have a dream to get out on the water too. Just because their not as saftey minded and experienced as others they still deserve a day out.

I'd rather drown fishing then live a long life wishing I was out fishing....
Well put ! You put in writing what I was thinking at the moment. For those that have hit it big or has better stuff try to remember a day when you was not so well off and raked and scraped to have something your family could enjoy, If you will do this just maybe you will not drown if you are standing in the rain with the nose not quiet so high in the air.

Re: False Economy....

Just because someone doesn't have a nice boat don't mean they aren't safe. Most of the ones that I see on the lake who are careless an dangerous are the rich guys with the high powered boats that don't have a clue on how to drive them.
The ones with the big stokey in there mouth with the paper band still on it so you will know it is a expensive cigar ! And if the boat turns over the gold anchor on the chain around there neck would drown them. The guys that swamp you while you are casting your bait. I know the type you are talking about.

Thank You...You got it..i dont judge folks by the price of there toys..i judge people by how they treat there toys. and others.i found that the people who could care less about there "stuff" and let it go to pieces..tend to be loud obnoxious and selfish..whereas people who treat there belongings.& friends. with respect, and keep an eye on everyones safety, are generally the people i chose to hang around..I could care less if its a brand spanking new Riva or a 20 y.o. Bayliner..do what you do...but do it right.

I prefer to judge people by how they treat other people. Toys can be replaced, people cannot. That said, I think the original post was in part about how people protect their loved ones.

Re: False Economy....

I think most are missing the point here anyway, first: that guy probably bought the I/O boat assuming it was just like working on his truck, second: he probably had no idea what the bellows were and that boat is most likely sitting in his back yard rotting away now since he can't afford or don't know how to fix it.
Third: Who would want a TV in their boat? There's better things to see while out on the water than what's on TV.

I run an old truck, and chances are if I do replace it, the next one will be older yet. The same goes for my boat, each boat I buy seams to be older than the last or at least just as old. I get a kick out of guys with high dollar rigs docked at those fancy on the water hangouts when I pull in in a half painted antique aluminum boat with primer spots and fish bait all over. If nothing else, it guarantees they give me plenty of room at the dock.

I tend to buy boats in the under $300 range, some need work, some more than others. I don't put any to sea that aren't complete or safe, but I really don't care how pretty they are. Just so they get me to the fish.

Also, I like the #2 post here by JB, and I agree, sometimes we really shouldn't interfere with natures process of natural selection.
