The probelm with the minivans are the transmissions. I've seen threads where guys have blown a couple of trans on a windstar. I had a windstar until last week and just bought a 4x4 traiblazer so I can now pull the boat out of the marina and take it to other lakes besides just the one at the marina. When i was thinking about using the minvan people told me to put a trans cooler on the trans? Good Luck

Some like those fancy lake boats; however, for my money a 17' Arima works best. Throw in a four stroke outboard, and you can fish the sound, ski the lake, crab the bay, cruise the canal, or ???? and use little fuil while doing it. Seating can be tricky, because these boats are desinged to offer a large, deep deck area with the standing fisherman in mind but Arima offers numerous seating options or you can buz up to Boaters World and pick up a couple sets of back-to-back seats. We have a family of six and this boat works fine, with five she works better. The gunwales are tall so the little ones have trouble tipping over the sides, the beam is wide so she's not tippy to start with, and the bow is enclosed for extra storage or a place for the kids to knap. With an open bow, one big wave over (possible swamp) and your wife may never let you take the family out again. I've owned many boats (21' Bayliner Trophy Hardtop, 16' Glaspar, 14' Olympian, 12' - 16' Whalers, etc.) and they served many purposes, but the Arima is my favorite all around boat. Kids favorite was the Trophy, but that thing was a money pit, took up to much room and had a taste for petro.

Something my uncle considered was getting a Fisher with a deep V where his grand kids could not just simply fall out of the boat. I believe his is a 17ft open bow fish and ski boat. Something I can't stand is having or even seeing a kid leaning over the side of a bass boat or other shallow hull boat while it's underway (especially full speed) or depending on how Young the child is I don't want him no were near the edge of the boat even when sitting. He's hauled quite a few people at one time on his Fisher brand boat, he would take them out to ski or tube. His boat is really good on gas.

Absolutely -- I put one on mine, along with a heavy duty power steering cooler. The Sienna tow package includes a tranny cooler. I would consider adding one to your SUV too -- especially ford products that rely on a fan clutch for cooling, versus an electronic fan. Those fan clutches wear out and engine heat means tranny heat.

Re: Family of 5 on a 17' boat ?

I have a 1989 17' Maxum and a family of four. My kids are a bit older at 11 and 13. I don't mind the size of mine and it is extremely easy to tow, and I"ve towed it four 10 years with a 95 Windstar that now has 180,000 miles on it and no tranny problems. Although I've probably just jinxed myself! I did install a tranny cooler and have religiously changed the tranny fluid. I have a friend who has a 2000 or 2001 18' Glasstron with a Johnson 150. It's a nice boat with great hole shot and plenty of speed, close to 60 mph. I would suggest following the advice of others here and consider maybe a 17-18 footer with a 130 to 150 hp outboard. I would personally lean toward an Evinrude E-tech. The only thing I don't like about my boat is it's maximum hp is rated at 85. Yes, I would like it to go faster!

roadrunnr,

How do you find the 17' Maxum with the 85 hp on it? Can you tube and ski adequately with your family of 4 on board?

Thanks in advance.

Sidechoke:
Tubing is not a problem and my 13 year old son can get up on 2 skis fine, but he only weighs about 100 lbs. My wife and I can get up on a slalom ski, but it sure is alot of work and sometimes it takes a couple of tries. My friends Glasstron with a 150 is great, pops you out quick. I've pulled both a single and a double tube with no problems. It would be nice to have a 115 on it, but it's rated for a maximum of 85 hp.

In other words get the biggest engine you can...you will not regret it.
