Fast Help needed on Alpha 1 Sterndrive Mystery 0-Ring Found

Hi, I am headed out on a trip tomorrow for the week. Of Course I had a boat problem that caused me to remove the sterndrive and replace the ujoint bellows. While that has not been fun, it moved along well.

What I am confused about is reistalling the Stern Drive. I found an "extra o-ring" that is thin and about 1.5 in I.D.?????

It is not one of the three already on the splined shaft, they are accounted for. Also, it is not the o-ring for the water passage way.

I have no idea where this came from? It was on the ground after removing the drive. I have searched everywhere and in the manuals and cannot for the life of me figure out where it came from. It fits too loosely on the splined shaft, I thought maybe some mechanic put in on just before Ujoint on splined shaft. But I see no reference to do this anywhere. I have checked all videos, posts, and manuals and it just does not make sense. But there it is!!

Can anyone help me quick?

Also, I have slight tear in gasket now. I am going to put some formagasket there to be a temp fix since it is sunday and I can't get any parts. Does anyone see an issue with that? I should have purchased a new gasket for this job but forgot.

I just need to use it for a week or two, then should be able to get back in to do it right.

The mystery "o-ring" is my biggest problem. Thanks in advance for your help!!

I should have purchased a new gasket for this job but forgot.

Ayuh,... It's an $8.00 gasket set,... get 1 at Napa tomorrow, 'n put it back together then...

That means yer reusin' all the o-rings too,............. :facepalm:

Best guess is that it goes on the water passage on the port side of the bellhousing. bond-o +1 get new gaskets or you could be asking for trouble.

I am now totally convinced on the gasket, I'm not going to take the risk. I just wanted to try out the other work i did until I get the gasket.

I am still not sure on the 0-ring though. I only had the bell housing off and far back enough to get the new u-joint bellows in. It was very difficult to do, but I did not want to take apart shift cable/boots and exhaust boots at this time. The Gimble bearing seemed fine.

So this mystery 0-ring is still out of no where. Since I know I have the Three that I need on the spline shaft I think I am good. I read a post that back in the day on older drives, there was a "loose o-ring" at the u-joint. Must hit the gimble bearing or something. Maybe the last mechanic thought it was needed, but I don't see any references to it at all anywhere.

I wonder if you have any other ideas? or just let it go? Again, I am scratching my head since the only place that I can think of that it came from is when the spline shaft dropped down after I pulled the sterm drive. It is that loose that i just slipped off? Again, the three that are supposed to be there are.

MHO.... If you have all the o-rings, gaskets, hardware, etc that is shown on your exploded diagrams, then go with that... My theory is that the previous owner had all those "extra" parts (i.e. The "extra O-ring) that one gets in bell housing gasket kits these days (and pump kits, for that matter) that he just threw it in there for "good measure". I have a collection of those spare parts on a nail on my shop wall... maybe I can use them on my lawn mower....right Chris?!
