Fasteners for galvanized trailer

What fasteners do you recomend for a galvanized trailer that is used in saltwater?

Zinc plated, galvanized, or stainless.

Price differnece is minimal, so it doesnt matter to me.

This is for the bunk mounts. I believe the previous bunk mounts were zinc plated and are now trashed (cant really tell, more rust than metal is all thats left). I bought galvanized bunk mounts to replace the trashed ones. I dont want to have to do this again.

you on the right track, that way you don't have a metalergy problem.

zinc plated anything is not worth the time to install.
Go with hot dip galvan or stainless.

Here is the dillema.

Stainless will provide better corrosion resistance than galvanized, but it will create a dissimilar metal situation (galvanized bracket/stainess bolt).

the galvinzed will last longer than the bunks.

one thing if using pressure treated for the bunks, over size the holes, and use pvc tubing over any of the bolt, to isolate them from the pt. just cut a short piece of hose, and insert it into the wood, has to be big enough for the bolt to go thru. the new pt. chemical eats metal. even stainless. big problem in construction right now.

about 4 years ago when the government change the chemical that has to be use for the treating, to keep the corrosion down were having to sleeve the hole you bolt thru, and isolation washers, behind the metal washer.

I have had ss fastners on my galvanized trailer for the past five years, no corrosion anywhere. Maybe cause I coated the contact areas with hightemp axle bearing grease?

Tashdaddy, isn't there three types of treated lumber nowadays?
The original stuff, marine use stuff and the new stuff thats okay for skin contact?

So this is still going on? I just built a shead last summer. Is it going to corrode the nails sooner than normal?

Just wondering if the thinking is still the same on the trailer fastener issue. I have the same problem. I've noticed that most of the newer galvanized trailers in this area (San Diego) are using SS fastners. Also, West Marine here doesn't seem to carry many galvanized fasteners - mostly SS and the galvanized they do carry are almost all lags and wood screws.

Any more recent thoughts on the corrosion issue with SS used for fastening galvanized components?

Use 316 or 304 Stainless hardware and it's a none issue.
