Fd-11 points with multi-meter

So I took racerone’s advice and you tubed a video about using a meter to set points. Look at pictures. Points are open. Timing mark on armature and magneto are way off? And yes I know there’s 2 marks. Why would it be so far off? Thx

Are you not supposed to use the mark on the flywheel and the mag plate?

Well yes it’s the flywheel and mag plate. Mag plate has the 2 marks and flywheel has one. They’re not lining up at all.

Sry. Either way the timing is not right. Guess I’m just going to use feeler gauge and set it at high spot on cam. Thx

Just a little puzzled on why the timing marks aren’t lining up. Double checked armature plate. It’s good.

there are 2 timing marks on the flywheel ---they are 180 degrees apart.----This method has worked since the 1950's .----Don't give up on learning this method.

Racerone I’m not giving up trust me, still trying to figure this out, I watched a video from Kevin Cronin on YouTube. Great video. Any advice on getting them to line up? Advance throttle?

Throttle position DOES NOT MATTER for setting points.-----That has been stated clearly before.-----Use a screwdriver to find which piston is near TOP DEAD CENTER as you turn the flywheel.------If bottom piston is near TDC then adjust the points for the coil at the rear !

Yessir I know how to set the points according to position on cam. I have 46 degrees from the flywheel key to the end of the word TOP. But you were saying to learn the multi meter way. Which is what I was trying to do to set the timing. If I set points accordingl to TDC and the cam lobe. The timing marks on flywheel do not line up with the two marks on the mag plate. Thx

Oh well-----Easier for me to do it ( have for over 50 years ) than to explain it I guess.----Look at these videos again and again.----The concept should become clear I think

I truthfully understand the concept. And appreciate your help. And I have set points before. Quite a few times. Never set timing before and was trying that out. But like I said my marks are way off from lining up. Thx I really appreciate all the advice

At one time I was thinking of running an " old motor , fix it yourself clinik "------Would have been 10 people , 10 motor stands , 10 work benches , zero hammers.----Walk around giving folks instructions.----A modest fee of $7.50 / hr each candidate.-----Never did it though.

Would have been a great class. I believe small engine repair is a lost art anymore. I personally want to take a class to work on small engines. Like doing pistons and rings. That’s why I ask you guys so many questions.,Just trying to learn thats all. I’ll have a question tomorrow about my Evinrude 15hp..

dawg----Are you perhaps struggling with the concept of the points ----ELECTRICALLY OPEN-----And mixing that up with points being -----OPEN AT 0.020" ----in you understanding here.-----Do not mix -up or combine the 2 concepts of setting the points !!!

That comment was confusing. Lol. I turn the crankshaft with the nut on it and use a ratchet, and set the points at 0.20” at the high spot on the cam lobe.

But if you are using a meter you are setting where the points " open electrically. " .--With that method the actual final gap does not matter !!---End of the story.
