I GET THE POINT.., what I’m telling you is that I can’t get the timing marks to line up!! No need to be so condescending, just because you have more knowledge. There’s probably things I can do that you can’t until you’re shown how., THANK YOU

Thx for all your help I do appreciate it. I’m not trying to be an ass. . I’m just trying to learn and it’s a little difficult through text. And I’m not getting all my messages. Hope you don’t stop replying. I’m done with the fd-11. Thx

I use the meter all the time but to do it you need the flywheel off and ideally to be using Franks timing tool or something similar as a pointer.

So I took racerone’s advice and you tubed a video about using a meter to set points. Look at pictures. Points are open. Timing mark on armature and magneto are way off? And yes I know there’s 2 marks. Why would it be so far off? Thx

How do you know if the marks line up with the flywheel off

Either I am missing something ... or you are

Surely you can get the marks to line up up by turning the flywheel

That comment was confusing. Lol. I turn the crankshaft with the nut on it and use a ratchet, and set the points at 0.20” at the high spot on the cam lobe.

Ok guys, lets take it from the top.If you don't have Franks timing pointer to fit in the crankshaft indicating where the flywheel would be you need to improvise one. when you have it properly fitted it will tell you where the flywheel marks would be.It should line up exactly with the crankshaft key when fitted. Having established tdc you then move the crankshaft so your pointer is between the marks on the magplate. You should have disconnected all the wires yo the points.Positive meter to the points, other side to ground.Turn the points adjusting screw either way until your meter pops, that is when the points open, check and recheck.tighten clamp screw and check again,Job Done.Hope this helps ( a lot easier with Franks tool).

Ok Vic and Geoffrey, yes I put the flywheel on when trying to line up timing marks. My issue is when the multi meter goes to 1 meaning the points have opened the marks on the flywheel are no where close to the two marks on the mag plate?

Geoffrey there is video by Kevin Cronin on you tube and he got the info on Iboats. He runs a wire to the points and out the screw hole of one of the condensers. He then puts the flywheel back on and uses a multi meter connected to the wire. Look at video and see what I mean. I know what timing fixture tool you’re talking about. That would be awesome

Right, however you cannot adjust the points with the flywheel on 'cos you can't get at them, hence the timing tool, also if it is off you don't need to poke anything through holes. By the way the cam lobe deal is not much use, you've got about a 10 degree spread that way so not cool.

In the video, the way he’s doing it is just like the same concept of the timing fixture tool, My flywheel and the one in the video has the inspection hole. If you have a chance look it up and it might help explain what I’m trying to explain, thanks

Here is a pic from video. It’s actually called fine tuning the points with a voltmeter.

The timing tool is nothing but a ---" dummy flywheel "-----You can use your flywheel to put every thing in the right position !!---Tighten the points hold down screw ( the one with the special washer ) -----Line up the top cylinder timing marks.-----Take flywheel off.----Put meter on ground and black wire for the front coil / points.---Turn cam screw till points OPEN and you are done.

Racer that’s the way I did it. Just like in the picture you see that I shared. When my points open and meter reads 1, my marks on the flywheel are not even close to marks on mag plate. And the inspection hole is over a coil and not over the points. What could be the issue? That’s the question I’ve been asking? If I could get the marks to line up I’d be done. Timing would be set..

Racer I just re-read your post. So I’m gonna ask to confirm this. Put flywheel on, turn flywheel until mark lines up between marks on mag plate? Take flywheel off . Use meter to set points? Tighten screw and that’s that? Tgx
