hi everyone, just verified the rear portion of the stringers on my 88 procraft 1950v are rotted. i never did any repairs like this before and have a couple of questions. do you have to take the top of the boat off to repair or will cutting out the deck give you enough access? also the boat has a large splashwell that looks to be connected to the transom from the inside.so if i had to remove the top how is that done? just the rear of the system is rotted as far as i can tell,is it possible to replace this portion only? last thing is what kind of wood and resins and matt to use? oh and the transom seems to be ok. but i cant see how just straight plywood is in there because the rear of the boat is not flat but has contors and shapes to it. is there wood all through the transom or just in the middle? all the transom repairs i seen on this forum are flat transoms not like a bass boat.

Re: fears confirmed

If the rear sections of the stringers are rotted then its a good bet the transom is rotting too. Most stringers are tied into or butted up against the lower part of the transom.Sounds like the best way is to remove the rub rail and start drilling out rivets to remove the top half.
I would drill a couple small holes into the transom from the inside about 1/2 inch deep.Dark colored shavings means wet wood.

Re: fears confirmed

trans80, alot of your questions depend on the condition of the boat. there's only 1 way to find out and that's to take a look. you might only have bad spots but in general, it's easier to get as much stuff out of the way so you can get the work done. it's a messy job, whatever you leave behind will get covered in fiberglass dust.

you said you confirmed the rear portions are rotted...any wood that's wet really should come out. how far forward is that?

everyone has an opinion on materials...marine plywood, poly resin, 1.5 oz mat/18 oz woven roving, and 8 oz cloth were my purchases. (uscomposites.com) examine what the boat was made from and go from there.

Re: fears confirmed

you might be able to pull it off, get us some pics

i don't know about mahogany. did you search for that? plywood is generally considered best, stronger than dimensional lumber.

Re: fears confirmed

trans....no worries.......

there is a post in progress......its just in the idea stage but it allready has great information.......here

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=239211

use either pressure treated plywood....must be totally dry...takes about a month....or exterior grade plywood......many prefer the exterior grade.....

polyester resin will be just fine.....though a lot of people will say epoxy...its your choice......

all resin is avalible at the wholsalers in your area....pick up the phone book ..look under fiberglass supplies....

in the mean time start searching and reading on this forum......search rot...transom replacment...stringer replacement....

the hull extension thread...while dealing with a different subject.....covers everything....from demoiltion to cap off...how to fiberglass...transom replacement...and this weekend ..it will show stringer replacement....

also erikg's unintentional stringer replacement......is a fantastic reference.

cheers
