Congress quietly let the federal subsidy for ethanol use in gasoline expire on Dec. 31. It's my opinion that ethanol production will now be less lucrative for the big chemical producers, and they (the chemical companies) will quit trying to push E-15 down our throats (and hopefully we can move on to an alternate fuel that actually makes sense).
In case anyone missed out on all the heated discussions earlier, the big ethanol producers petitioned EPA to allow (but not require) the use of E-15 in automobiles. EPA's testing showed no ill effects of E-15 use in model years 2001 and newer, and therefore EPA decided to allow it's use in a limited number of automobiles. In no case did they ever dictate the use of E-15. Here's a link to the EPA site pertaining to this: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/additive/e15/
Anyway, now that these chemical companies won't be getting government money to produce ethanol I expect this issue will go away.
