Crash, I have a 2006 F90 with something less that 200 hours on it. The engine runs like a sewing machine. I took off a 1977 70 HP Merc (which was a good 'ol engine) and put on the F90. Its quiet, smooth, strong and reliable. So quiet that I ended up installing a stereo. If I had it all to do over again I would do the exact same thing.
The only problems I've had was when some salt water got in the fuel tank. That's my fault, not Yamaha's. I resolved that problem and life has been great ever since.
There's some good advice on this forum about what to do when buying a used outboard. Since I take my rig offshore I really stay after the maintenance. But that doesn't mean that everyone else does. Best of luck - I hope all works out well.
