Okay Fellas, tuck your egos away, this IS today's new airforce!!!!!! Wow...........they look like they're twelve to sixteen!!

KC135.jpg

The 376th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron, flew an ALL FEMALE KC-135 Stratotanker air refueling mission over Afghanistan on Jan. 31, 04. Early on Jan. 31, a KC-135 Stratotanker took off from Ganci Air Base, Kyrgyzstan, carrying more than 180,000 pounds of fuel and an all-female crew-both pilots, a navigator and a boom operator. The event marked the first all-female crew to fly an air refueling mission into Afghanistan from Ganci. Capt. Heather, and the boom operator, Senior Airman Lyndi, are all assigned to the 99th Air Refueling Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Ga. They have been deployed there since Dec. 9, 03.

"the plane is probably older than the crew".

Nice looking bunch. Do make me wish I was 21 again. :)

FWIW, when my #2 daughter was assigned to VR-21 in the 1970s she was Plane Captain on R6D (C118) 131609. The very plane I crewed regularly when she was born.

These girls apear to be rather young. This brings up a question. I know nothing about flying, military or private sector, but how much flight time, training, and experience does the military require to fly of those things?

The Senior Airman is the one on the right front (facing us) she would be the youngest. She would be a minimum of 19. (if she joined at 17 and made "Below the Zone" promotion). Each of the officers has at least a four year degree. This would mean the youngest they could be would be 21-22. The pilot and co-pilot are at least Captain in the AF, this means they are roughly 25-27. Once the officers are "commissioned" and go through pilot training, the AF doesn't require you to have XX hours before they fly. The AF does require so many hours of flight and special training completed to move up to the pilot or co-pilot position.

Either way, they all have my backing!!!

AK Chappy

Very well could be older than their parents. The last -135 was delivered to the Air Force in 1965. Just an ole' 707.....Travolta's got one ;)
P.S.(JB, to you and your daughter, thank you)

The way things have been going Tex (pc) that will probably change soon.

Maybe they will name it the French way. Hmmm, let's see. How about "The compartment that houses the unisex crew of the flying craft" :p

Re: Feelin' old?

Old? That's twice now today... the first was this morning when I was chatting with this 'nice' girl at the coffee shop. She works at the grocery store by my place. When my partner and I left he said that she'd been checking me out since I walked in. I got in the truck and looked in the mirror... I'm old enough to be her dad... a few years ago. Maybe I remind her of her grampa... who knows? :)

Yes, a beautiful young crew there.

That happened several years back. It is now called the "Flight Deck"

I won't go into all the other non-PC terms that got canned also.. but there were quite a few. :)

AK Chappy

Re: Feelin' old?

The "cockpit" was carried over from sailing vessels, named after the pit in which birds fight.
