my boat feels funny in the water. I had a 25hp on it before and I didn't notice any issues but now with a 40 on it, it wants to lean to port and when driving it turns great to starboard but feels very sketchy and turns lazy not as tight as starboard.

What kinda boat and what is it's rated horsepower? Is this a remote or tiller motor? What is the cavitation plates height in relation to the bottom of the hull? Even? Above? Below?

Umm all the boat says is DART and Traveler on the side, there are no plates on it so I don't know what it's rated for it's 13' 7" long and 4' 10" wide. the plate is even with the hull and it's got full controls. Also the battery is on the Port side and I put the Fuel tank on the Starboard side. When it's just wein the boat I try to sit as close to the center as possible.

Typical behavior of an overpowered boat with the trim tab not properly adjusted, or even with the trim tab adusted to max.

It is a bit overpowered, but you need to balance it out nicely, even weight on the sides, a 14ft is rated for about a 25hp max, .... just run that 40hp at minimum power, you'll be fine ...

Some 14fters are onl rated at 15hp, some at 25hp and a few of the older ones were rated for 40hp. It really depends on the hull design and width. Yours will be closer to 20-25hp based on your beam i think.

Yes YOU will be fine, but that will really not be great for the motor............you are lugging the motor this way.

Why did you switch motors?

In addition to the above, the list to port can be from the prop torque. It may also be exaggerated by a hydrofoil if you have one installed.

I was actually looking at the motor today when I had it in the up position, where the motor and the transom intersect it's not 90 degrees it seems something is out of whack, looks like I need to loosen one side of the mount and put a shim between the mount and transom face. ever hear of this?

Also upon further investigation the Anti Cavitation plate sits about 1.5 inches below the keel. how much of a problem will this cause? can I shim the motor up that 1.5 inches?

Did U adaj the skeg. trim tag? 1.5 in should not be that much of a problem. level the motor to the transom shim if necessary

What is the Trim Tag? I've never heard of it.

Check the transom by pushing the motor front to back
as the thrust might do.Watch the transom for movement or flexing.
Raise the motor until the antivent plate is at least even with the bottom of the boat.
With the boat on a trailer check the bottom for a hook . Using a straight edge. about 4 ft long look for concave areas ahead of transom.

Bottom of boat is fine no concave areas, and transome is as solid as can be expected from a 40 year old boat 8)

however when the motor is mounted properly on the boat it is crooked.

If the mounting bracket is on the transom correctly then
it appears something is bent or broken.Possibly the cushion mounts are damaged or worn out.
This sure could cause your problem.
