Few Questions On a 63 Evinrude 75hp

I have a couple of questions that I havent been able to find looking in my manual and here on the forum.

Its a 1963 Evinrude Speedifour 75hp Model# 75352

My questions are:

1) What is the correct oil mixture ratio

2) How much PSI should I have

3) My engine rocks back and forth a lil in the casing, is this normal? I cant find a thing about engine mounts in my book.

4) The Manual says to run a J4J Spark plug. I guess that is a Champion Brand code, So I got J4C, but It looks like I regular spark plug, I thought the marine ones were flat?

Ahoy, Matt

1. OMC said 24:1 on pre-1964 engines, but some believe that you can get away with 50:1 on that monster. I would go 24:1.

2. As long as the psi are over 85-90 the psi doesn't matter. The range fom highest to lowest should be less that 15%; that matters.

3. Dangfino. There may be some mount cushions that died of old age.

4. Champion J4C is the correct plug. Gap them at .030". Surface gap plugs came along later and are still not always the best for a particular engine.

24:1 Thats ALOT of oil! What makes some believe that you can run 50:1. I dont wanna look like a mosquito truck going down the lake.

The range only varies 1-3 Psi's in each so im good there.

I will open up the front covers to get a better good to see if there are some type of mounts or something.

Ok good, those are the ones im running in there.

All the V4s run 50:1 when using TCW3 rated oil.Even the 58 50 hp.Thats a good thing because they can really go through the gas.
Only change would be if you had to run SAE 30 oil then you would have to go 24:1.

I was running a 32:1 In there just a minute ago, and it was smoke city, I was like golly and thats only 32:1.

Awesome, so now if I can get the motor movement problem corrected I will be set!

In those old models the entire powerhead and midsection floated on mounts inside the cowl. The cowl and outer housing stayed rather motionless but inside the powerhead and midsection would dance around quite a bit. It would tilt a fair bit when throttle was applied. In !969 OMC went to a different mount system and eliminated the encapsulating cowl.

tashasdaddy, Thanks for the links I had be looking into that, I have spent alot of time here on the forum looking around, and I keep reading about decarb'n the engine, but could never find a good write-up.

If you ever need some help or tips with that double trailer I saw you post about let me know, I have made a double out of a single trailer.

I will try to take some pics of my set up, and get them up on the forum, So you guys can see what she was then, to the way she is now.

Cool got some good info in there. I had come acrossed that once, then forget how I got there, Its not on the top of the section like most of my other forums I belong too.

Now all I have left is to buy a new prop, and she will be good to go.

I will try to get some pics of it when it stops raining. If you got a welder, grinder, chop saw, I dont see why ya cant do it yourself.

I have one more question on this motor, it has a shear pin style prop, and I cant seem where to fine a kit for these all I can find are the nut kind.

This is the only thing holding be back from the water, well the floor too, but thats for a different section. lol

also tashasdaddy I have not forgotten about you, I just need it to quit raining for I can get the skis off and get you a picture.

There are 3 rubber mounts, two upper ones between the powerhead adapter and lower front housing, and one lower one between the exhaust housing and lower front housing. They are pretty stiff mounts so movement should be minimal, not flopping around nearly as much as say a 35 or 40. If you have very much movement, one or more mounts are probably sheared. Replacement is not a quick and easy job.

How will I know which Prop nut is right for my configuration?

I am running a 10X12 prop on it.

Also since you can look up the part numbers I need to know what the part number is for the black tubing that connects the exhaust port to the hole on the plate of the upper lower unit.
I can get a pic if needed.

Sorry to ask so many questions but im new to the outboard world

Here's the real deal: There are two basic propeller hub outside diameter sizes. The large one is the same size as the gearcase and the small one is considerably smaller than the gearcase, looks almost like a mismatch but it works fine. 10X12 is the large one. The small hub prop is 10x9-1/4.

The large hub prop uses:
377924 prop nut superseded by 380610 nut, cotter key and drive pin assembly.
307217 drive pin
307244 cotter key
304576 thrust washer

The small hub prop uses:
309947 nut
309954 drive pin
309955 cotter key
304576 thrust washer

311766 previously mentioned is a cotter key, superseded by 307244.


The exhaust relief bellows boot is part number 305402. In the end of it is a 305403 retainer. Inside is a 305397 spring. It is all retained by a 305536 clamp.

Hope this clears things up.

So you are saying if I ask for part # 380610 i will get the nut, the key, and the pin all in one kit?


JB your right with out questions there would be no need for this site, Im sure glad there is though!!

I really need to get a parts manual, where is the best place to find one? Ive looked on ebay but I didnt see one.

This is my second Outboard to work on, but I think im hooked! ! The other was a Merc, but I think the Rude is better! Well I know its better lol
