Re: Fiberglass mat and polyester resin

Can anyone tell me what this black stuff is its like a rubber and only in certain spots on the hull does it need to come out or just leave it alone

That looks like mastic, a black tar-like adhesive often used to stick large mirrors to the wall above the sink....

That water is being held behind (actually it's in front of, to be accurate) the forward most bulkhead, correct?

Limber holes are supposed to prevent the water pooling and allow water to flow back to the bilge & get pumped overboard....

Second: This is an example of why it's tough to follow & help on a project when the resto is spread across several different threads.

Having access to all the available info (pix & posts) is extremely important, and now you've asked (& I've answered

) a totally different question about stingers, hull details (the mastic & etc), and modifications that are unrelated to the FG mat & resin question that started this thread....

Have a good turkey day

Re: Fiberglass mat and polyester resin

i understand that i have asked a whole new question but i never got enough responce from the other thread and had people answering this one and i needed to know.....i thought that this fourm was about restoration didnt realize that you need to post for every thing you need to know on seperate threads.....i appreciate all answers i get and pay close attention to what people say since i am not an expert or for that matter very inexperienced in fiberglass and restoration....i have read a lot on here and watch videos of many a thread but either i missed some things or it wasnt talked about i still dont know if i have to leave a space between the stringer and the transom or pb it directly to the transom and tab...i am sorry if i am doing this wrong i will try and do better in the future...this is my first dealing with fiberglass and restoration.....as for the limber holes that cant be done because what is holding the water is a FLAT wood stringer i am assuming that is what it is i know its wood under because i check to make sure waht the flat piece was.

Sorry for the late delay.

It was a Holiday factor Im sure :) ..

As far as your filler questions .. I think ( If I understand correctly ) that you can use a filler to tab in your stringers/transom.

I dont think that you would have any problem with any direction you wish as long as its done correctly.

Personally I think having some kind of radi in fiberglass tabbings makes the glass more workable.

Also for the record .. you Can NOT bubble roll a single layer of fiberglass.

Well You can try but its futile and costs you Time in your layups. Multiple layers of glass is when you bust out your Resin roller. You move resin around .. you move glass around .. its not just about rolling out the 'bubbles'

A resin roller serves two results..

1. To move resin rich areas to resin poor areas. Lets say stringers are being laminated.. gravity will cause the resin to fall into your bilge. You need to baby that resin back UP until it starts to gel.

2. Make Shape. Yup .. you can actually move resin and glass around with a resin roller. This application is used for outside lams to help get you to a better Fair in the repair. Thus giving you a better initial glass layup of the repair without multiple applications of putty.

So in fact .. the good ol' "bubble roller" is commonly misused to just .. well .. roll out bubbles in our fiberglass/resin lams.

Its a tool just like a drill or a jigsaw. It does have its place. But used in the right hands its better then a grinder any day.

I hope this helps you some.
