I'm building a speaker box out of particle board. I want to encapsulate it in fiberglass and paint it - for practice sort of.

I would like to use polyester resin and either cloth or mat. I bought some stuff from walmart.

Any suggestions?

Spend most of your time glassing corners - both inside & outside. Also experiment with different mixes and pot life. And - And make the resin in small batches. Try both the cloth and mat as they handle differently. If you have the time also try some woven roving.

This practice will pay off when you tackle your real project.

nix the woving roving..it wont go around those sharp corners of yours..

use mat..only mat..dont try the corners with your main layups...

Patch corners with mat first..using some ripped up mat circles .. then mat your box ( you can keep those corner mattings down with the main sides if you do it correctly.. )

oh yea..Dont cut your mat..Tear and rip to size..dont leave a cut edge as it will be hard to lay down with resin..( sanders work great to remove burrs..but grinders and more resin/glass is needed for air voids )

Re: Fiberglass Practice

So you want to try fiberglass......

My suggestions....

Buy the cheap 1 " or 1 -1/2 inch plastic bristle paint brushes at walmart - a whole handfull - they will be strictly use once.

Get a bunch of 2 liter or 1 liter soda bottles.... cut them up with a knife and they make fantastic mixing bowls ---- once again use once

A box of rubber or latex gloves ......

Use the paint brush to smooth out and brush on the resin and toss the whole used portion away.

Have fun

I suggest that you try the roving and see how difficult it is to work with on other than flat surfaces.
