Fiberglass Primer ??

I'm gearing up to repaint my soon to arrive 25hp Rude. The cover is fiberlass, or a same type composite, not metal. I've searched for a self ecthing fiberglass primer and all that comes up is alum etching primer. Is there such a thing as fiberglass etching primer ? Or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

You don't need an etch primer for fiberglass. Etch primers are for metal. Any automotive primer will be fine, just make sure its sanded properly. However some primers are not compatable with gelcoats. I highly doubt the motor is gelcoated. Sand fiberglass with 180 grit blow dust off using a blower and some sort of brush like a paintbrush then prime.

Hey Thanks. That clears up some confusion on my part. When it comes to primer; I'm finding primers in different colors. Not many. Should the primer be the same color as the paint, if possible ? As you can see; I don't do a whole of painting.......:redface:

Stay away from the red, I have found it doesn't sand worth a darn.

Any auto parts store has it in a can, I use Duplicolor high build grey, works really well.

Just scuff with some 320, I think 180 is a little heavy and will show sand marks through the primer, no need to go nuts and strip it down, that actually makes it harder, if the shine is gone you are good.

I work part time at a body shop and we actually use a Scotch brite pad to prep parts so all you really need to do is remove the shine.

Duplicolor also makes a good single stage paint, I used that on mine too, then clear if you want and remember to tape whatever you don't want painted.
