Fiberglass question

I did some glass work on my stringers about 10 days ago with laminating resin (non-waxed). I want to finish the install by adding some matt and woven roving. At this point, how critical is the sanding? I realize with laminating resin you can just continue with additional layers, but this was 10 days ago. I have roughed it up, but the areas between the hull and the stringer are difficult to sand, and was wondering how critical is it that all areas be sanded? I will give it a good wipe with acetone before I proceed with glassing.

Thanx for your help.

Re: Fiberglass question

Acetone wipe is good. Is the surface at all tacky to the touch? If you wipe it down with acetone and it becomes tacky again, that is all you need; you're good to go.

Allways scuff with some 36-40 g paper before post layups m8 !

1. sanding will remove any burrs sticking up that would create an impossible air free layup..and will make a secondary mechanical bond with the resins ( better bond )

2. Ive never seen anyone in the professional marine industry, Ever let a layup or wet out, go for any more then 24 hours without sanding.

3. your talking stringers ( wouldnt matter anyways..) ..sand what you can..then scuff with die grinder in those hard to get to nooks and crannies..

Re: Fiberglass question

Any more opinions? YD says must sand everything, while croSSed says just wipe with acetone.

Thanx for your input.

Re: Fiberglass question

Well,.........

You could Sand it 1st,+ be Sure.......
Or,......
You could Just Wipe it,+ be Guessing.........

Personally,..... If the resin has Hardened to the touch,.... I Sand it Anyways........
Just to be Sure......

Right Now,.... I'm doing a project with Non-Blushing Epoxy.......
But,... Even with Only about 10/12 hours since the last pour,....
I'm Sanding it before Restarting the process........

I guess you are right. Why skimp on a couple of hours of sanding or grinding to jepoardize a project into which you have invested many hundreds of hours and thousands of $$. When in doubt, sand.

Thanx for your input. Have a great day.

Re: Fiberglass question

If used laminating resin and you did a clean glass job, then just wipe it with an acetone soaked rag and then apply your finish layers of glass.

If you glass work was kinda sloppy, happens all the time, then you'll want to give it a quick grind (like Dr. Yatch mentioned) to ensure airless layup.
