Re: more pics...

follow the instructions in 2012_0310card10016.jpgthis. when the bearing carrier seals have been replaced and it looks more like2012_0310card10014.jpgthis, you're ready to fabricate two guide pins for re-install. book says threaded rod. i couldn't locate any in the size i needed so i used 2 1/2 inch bolts. cut the heads off and slot the ends so they can be installed with a flathead screwdriver2012_0310card10008.jpgalign the carrier and slide her in. might have to tap it in the last inch. i used a dowel rod and a mallet. thread two bolts in snug the back off one full turn, remove guide pins with scredriver and needle nose and thread in the other two. tighten slow and even to specified torque.

Re: obstacles=no progress

thought i took more pics of the hull but i didnt. i'll shoot and post some tomorrow. she sat so long i had to clean the carb bowls, jets, etc to get her running but i got her going. been busy with wiring. pulled the motor off to fix the loose trim and changeout the 5th and final drain tube as well as remaining gelcoat at splashwell area. did alot of rework on the trim motor lower bracket. it was bent and had a cracked weld. steering was installed but when i tightened the nut on the helm, one piece broke off. major bummer! i got creative and fixed it. i'll explain in detail when i post pics of it.

2012_0310card10010.jpg2012_0310card10011.jpg2012_0310card10012.jpgsome of my spare parts. didn't realize i had 3 pair of shift solenoids. if i switch out the clutch dogs, i have a spare prop shaft...and extra shift wire assy...been so long, i forgot what had in the box. part of the reason i wont part with the boat. as long as i can keep her going, i'll keep her.

Re: need advice...

been too busy to pick up the camera. installed one of two seats. fabricating cushions for livewell lids...the other two seats. wood is ready for resin primer. not glassing the wood, just soaking with resin. should still outlast the vinyl and the foam. more in a few days.

filed for antique registration...$6.25 :D. saves me $25 a year. that will pay for the restoration in 40 years!

update

update

ok here's how it went on launch day. prepped the boat and hit the road. 4 miles to ramp. stopped for McLunch, 3 miles to ramp. noticed camber on one side of trailer...not promising. decided to go back home...slowly. lined up to back into driveway, put it in reverse, let off brake and...SNAP! axle broke at inner u-bolt. i mean broke...off completely. wifey directs sporatic traffic while i grab a jack, a 2 foot piece of pipe and a ratchet strap. of course i inserted the pipe part way into the axle tube then creatively strapped the pieces together and backed it back into the driveway. tire took out a rusty fender and left a black rubber mark on the hull but no damage to the boat. bummer huh? shopped around for an axle but couldn't find one to fit so i bought 6' of sch 80 pipe and a pair of spindles and made a new one. btw, sch 80 pipe is sooooo overkill. sch 40 would have done the job. wheel bearing went bad in the jeep so had to deal with that. a week later we launched. engine needed to be broken in after sitting idle for so long so i spent 2 hours puttering up and down my canal. result...fouled plugs.after much tinkering i finally have her running fairly well. i'm skipping alot of details but you get the idea...lots of failure, little sucess

Re: update

Re: update

now i'm working on the trailer, bunks etc and trying to sync the motor. need to go buy a tach. had problems with the push button box. little plastic piece broke behind the throttle lever so she was stuck in forward with no way to shift. fixed that. lower unit still took on water. had to change driveshaft seals. impeller was frozen to driveshaft, had to cut it off. inspection of shift cable revealed the need to shrink tube and neoprene it. that turned out really well. trust me, it's waterproof now. i've put two more hours of low rpm time on her and took her out in the river. hull rides about right sitting still and doesn't hesitate to plane. solid as a rock at 25 in two foot surf. i am quite pleased. now that i've tinkered, it shifts fine, starts with little choke and idles in gear at no throttle without stalling. trying to talk wifey into bringing the camera to shoot a video but she's afraid the camera will get damaged. will try to post more pics and video soon.
Best wishes,
Scott

Re: popping fuses?

Re: popping fuses?

I set the timing and was adjusting the throttle cable...then i blew the fuse next to the power pack. with the throttle lever in the start position, it will crank but couldnt get it to start. with the lever pulled back to minimun, i turn the key and pop, there goes the fuse. i'm baffled. i didn't hook any battery connections up backward or anything that would blow the rectifier. solenoid does what it should in start position. move the throttle lever and the fuse blows. what the heck is going on? could the cutout switch be bad? anyone have an opinion? Thanks,
Scott

Re: popping fuses?

Re: popping fuses?

well, as usual i go off the deep end looking everywhere except the most likely place the problem could be. ten guesses what the most common problem is on an outboard with an electric shift lower unit...yup...solenoid.
i noticed the water churning behind the boat when cranking, it just didn't register...she is in gear!
switch is in neutral but it's in forward. book says 5 to 7 ohms, solenoid says .6=fried! thank heavens i have spares.
sux i gotta tear the lower unit apart for the umpteenth time. got her in the driveway and since i've been fighting water in the lower unit oil, i loosened the lower plug and WOW...crystal clear OIL! YEAH! may have lost a solenoid but at least i fixed the leak (driveshaft seals) and got the timing set (was retarded 7 deg at wot). every cloud has it's silver lining.

Re: popping fuses?

Sorry to hear about the solenoid. Can you get a replacement? I splashed the Flamingo today but had some issue. Motor ran GREAT but had some loading issues and tore the keel up pretty bad. Oh well she can be fixed. I've heard those solenoids can be hard to find. Hopefully that won't be the case for you.

nah, i'm good. I have 4 pair. now i have three and a half pair...and enough beer to get the job done. sorry yer keel took a beating. the solenoids are still available and the price came down to about $80. honestly, i'm so happy i fixed the oil leak, i don't even care i lost an $80 solenoid. I can swap 'em and launch in...4 hours. getting good at it.
