Fiberglass resin to fill large chips?

Is it good enough to patch large 1"-2" chips (below waterline) in the gelcoat that are down to the fiberglass? Fiberglass strings are frayed as well. Its polyester resin with no talc, so it's 100% waterproof, or so it says. i wont be painting it till the end of the season.

I just want to stop whatever water is leaking into my hull through the fiberglass. (if it even is)

Pics would really help, but based on what you say is true, I'd for sure cut some small pieces of CSM, Grind em out a bit with a dremel tool, wipe it all down with Acetone, and patch em with mat and resin. Resin without some glass is pretty much WORTHLESS.

Thanks for the reply, what is CSM? Theres still fiberglass in the chips, but i have heard that fiberglass that isnt covered with gel coat can seep/leak water into the boat.... so id like to fix without re gel-coating it.

Just want to "seal the fiberglass for now" i guess.

CSM is Chopped Strand Mat. What kind of resin are you planning on using? Do you plan on Re-Gelcoating in the future or Painting?

It's called bondo Fiberglass resin, it has a pic of a boat on it and says its waterproof.. I believe its polyester based liquid. I have it left over from another boat project. It was a kit and i still have some mat left, but was just gonna use resin because i plan on re-gelcoating the entire bottom at the end of the season. I guess i'm just looking for if its ok to apply to fiberglass that is below the waterline... will it seal it out? Is it truly waterproof?

Need pics .. there is no way we can tell you application without seeing it..or some description of What happened . ( did your anchor fall off and put a dozen Pock marks on the bottom ? or ?

Give us pics or at least a bone here LOL ..

If not..then yea..resin coat it and your good to go ... ;) .

Resin without glass is brittle and not a good fix by itself.

No, you're talking about "reinforced Bondo".

Woodonglass has the best fix...

...cut some small pieces of CSM, Grind em out a bit with a dremel tool, wipe it all down with Acetone, and patch em with mat and resin. Resin without some glass is pretty much WORTHLESS.
