Fiberglass TLC

Just bought my first boat.Needs some motor work but in the meantime would like to clean it up.Overall in pretty good shape but has some oxidation on top part.Also the fiberglass on top feels "rough" like fine sandpaper as compared to lower and hull section which are nice and smooth.Will this buff out with a good compound or do I need to wet sand or something.<br />One more thing.. is the carpet usually glued down.Hard to replace?<br />If I'm in the wrong forum just let me know and I will repost.<br />Thanks for the time.

Right forum. the simple first, yes most carpet is glued. If replacing carprt suggest you use a good marine carpet with rubber backing. Its real easy to work with. You did not post the type of boat or year of the boat. Most oxidation will come off with a marine wax/compound made for fiberglass (Walmart). As to the top part feeling like sand paper really need more info, does it have a clear gel coat, metal flake in the fiberglass or is it a solid color in the fiberglass?<br />Good Luck and enjoy.

I would try buffing it first before resorting to wet sanding...3M makes an excellent product called Heavy Duty Fiberglass Restorer. If that doesn't bring it back to suit you...try wet sanding with 800 grit & a little soapy water...then buff it out...then wax.

Thanks for the info.The boat is a 1980 Glastron bass boat.The top part and interior is metalic with probably a clear coat.The hull is just a two tone with a solid plain coat.<br />It's just the metallic part that does not feel as smooth as it should.
