Re: Fibreglassing a large area - Update

My vote would be to avoid fiberglass, and to put on an industrial deck coating. The non automotive product name (as opposed to the Rhino product) is called Hypalon.

You trowel it on over a clean dry plywood surface, and it forms a thin, durable, flexible membrane, and it lasts forever. You can get it in virtually any color you want, and you can add rubber bits in it for a non-skid surface if you want to. It is pretty slippery without them.

We used to use it all the time on outdoor decks on homes, as well as chemical proof concrete floors around chemical tanks and such in pulp mills.

But from what I understand of your project, I would think it a superior product to fiberglass or epoxy.

Do a google search for "hypalon"

Roofs finished!! Looks fantastic. I haven't got the invoice yet so don't know the exact materials used but here's a readers digest version for now - fill to achieve close to perfectly level surface, two layers of matt fibreglass, 2 layers of gelcoat (flowcoat), tiped the final layer of gelcoat for a slightly rough finish. He did each layer of glass in one complete session (12ft x 30ft). The whole job took him 6 full days and he only going to charge me 700 bucks plus materials (at cost) - a true country trademan, maticulous and cheap - only downside was that he spread the 6 days over 4 weeks ;)

Pics and details coming soon to a computer screen near you!

Aldo

We'll be watching for the white picket fence. :D

ps looks like you could host a square dance on that new roof.

btb, right now, I could be usin some of the weather that goes along with your new roof.

Well in all honesty thats the long term plan, but not in this boat - we'll step up to something bigger in 7 to 12 years and hopefully retire. The lakes only 1 hrs drive from Melbourne, all our family is in Melbourne, its no big deal to comute for weekends & birthdays etc.

Aldo

Very nice, Aldo. I noticed the wife didn't go for the purple/eggplant color. What happened? ... not that you should argue about it. :)

Have you ever held a heavy object that you cannot put down for whatever reason, you arms begin to cramp, you start to sweat, eventually every muscle and bone goes numb with fatigue???

THATS what it feels like keeping the eggplant at bay - its a constant battle of the wits and I fear that I'm losing :D

Notice how the blues are getting darker?

Aldo

it's been nearly 8 months now and I can honestly say that with an area this large....................white is way too bright  .

We're gunna paint the gelcoat one or two shades darker than 'skyblue'.

Aldo
