I've got the above Evinrude. I have two problems that may be connected.

The first is a get Vibration and uneven running between 1500 and 1800 RPM (like misfiring cylinders) and the engine doesn't start first time, the uneven running is intermittent.

The second problem is that I have recently bought this outboard and rigged it to a new boat. I have tried several differently sized props and altered engine height to optimise set-up. However I have a feeling my outboard isn't performing to the best of it's abilities. WOT with a 21" prop was 4500 and with a 19" is 4750 which is the lower recomended rev range. This engine is sitting on a 20' RIB and the boat manufacturers recomended speed with a 150 is about 45 knotts, I'm only getting 38 knotts. I'm suer that if I could find the power to drive me at 5250 then performance should be spot on.

I spoke to a local dealers that told me that the first problem may be caused by the spark plugs as aparently the Ficht likes to eat plugs and there hasn't been a change since the outboard was commissioned and have 70 hrs on. He suggested I remove one plug at a time to check the condition and gaps. First I checked that all plugs where indexed correctly which they where. The condition on the plugs where all consistant with each other and had a light dusting of dark carbon over (except where the spark jumps between electrodes) all plugs gap in at 0.026".

Now it's possible that one plug is playing up. This could be part of the story for the lower power output as well.

First I'd like to find out what the correct spark plug gap should be?

Second I would like you more experienced guys to give me suggestions as why the outboard might be running down on power.

Thanks for reading, hope someone can help.

Believe they should have the Champion XC12PEPB gapped to .030

So what effect would you get from 0.026" gapped plugs? It seems this type of engine is very sensitive to differently gapped plugs.

Is there anyone that would like to comment on the vibration/missing problem I've encountered?
