I have a 1970 115 johnson 4 cyl. How do you check the lube and because of the black oil substance leaking before the prop someone told me to change the fill/drain plug gaskets. I'm new to outboards so if someone could help me that would be great.

Re: fill/drain plug gaskets

I would like to ask a second question also. After the motor runs for a while in idle the motor will die. It was rebuilt this year but not ran much do you think I need to adjust the carb. Thanks for everyones help!!!

You really should get a manual. Lower unit lube is a maintenance item that should be drained & refilled at least anually. While the drain plugs are out you can change gaskets. Get them from a dealer or internet. The lower unit seals may also be gone. In which case water is probably getting into the gearcase. Not good for the gears & not that hard to replace with the proper service manual to guide the way.

the black oil could also be burnt excess oil from the motor not running correctly.<br />mine was caused by faulty power pack, once that was replaced - no more oil stain.
