I have a 2007ish 40HP efi 4stroke mercury.

The capacity of the gearcase is 440ml.
The maintenance manual shows 2 vent screws (back and front) for 710ml gearcases (just like mine) and 1 vent screw for 410ml cases (front only).

The maintenance says to take out the vent screw and fill it until it comes out the only/front vent screw.
This is reversed for the 710ml gearcase with 2 vent screws, it comes out the back and then you stop....I am supposed to wait until it starts coming out the back vent screw or front?

I tried the method with the back vent screw,,,pumped in lots of air and only 300ml went in....how am I to do this? I sthere a mistake in the manual?

thanks,

nicknight.

Re: filling gear case

nvm: read the procedure for reassembling the gearcase.

Since the motors physical characteristics seemed to be desrcribed by both procedures guess what one is supposed to do. To each procedure! thats right, both!

Fill up the gearcase until fluid comes from the rear vent. Close the rear vent, then continue to fill it until it comes out the front vent.

I guess Mercury did not bother to update the maintenance procedure on their website or service manual.
