Trying to set up gps/finder on new boat and correct old installation by prior owner. Please see attached pic. The current transducer cable runs out the bottom below the water line. Looks like an old thru-hull for something but now gunked with sealant. No leaks but i'll be taking this cable out to install a new cable and transducer.

Question, best method for reusing this hole for the cable? Is there a fitting or something for below water line install like this? I'm not knocking the prior guy bc it seemed to work up until now. Just want to make sure i've got as secure as possible. thanks.

i've got 7 holes to fill below the water line thanks to the only swim platform I have on it.

I was thinking a stainless steel screw + 3M 5200

Re: Filling thru-hull/transducer hole

what is the black gunk on the cable and the thru-hull fitting?

I wouldn't be trusting that too much.
I would remove the thru-hull fittings, clean everything and rebed them with either 5200 or 4200 adhesive sealant.

as for the cable, you can get a stainless mini clam-shell cover to go over the opening. I would remove the black crap, and install a mini clamshell packed with 5200 or 4200.

Exactly, its slathered with whatever that sealant is. Makes me nervous. I was wondering what cover to use with the cable. Wasnt sure if a clamshell below the waterline was the way to go so thanks for the suggestion.

Clam-shell facing aft, filled with 5200 sealant and the hole/cable also sealed with 5200.

The clamshell facing aft is just to direct water from hitting the hole with any strong force which might push on the sealant.

I?m sorry, but stuffing a thru hull fitting below the water line with sealer and hoping it does not leak is B.S.
Either fill the existing hole and drill a new one above the water line or invest in a good waterproof cable gland.

So true. Not only that, it's a very bad idea. I'm sorry, but the "reverse clamshell" is a highly specialized dive made from the 10 meter board during the Olympic games.

Looking at your hull configuration and its nice flat keel area makes me think you have an ideal opportunity to install either a thru-hull or shoot thru-hull transducer (if bilge access allows). If so, you can lose the transom mount style transducer and patch up the holes the right way ... with your favorite combination of resin/glass/gelcoat products.

Agreed... a "clam shell" will do nothing there.... BEST solution would be to glass the hole and run the cable above the water line..... Another fair solution would be the install a bronze or stainless thruhull with a hose run to above the water line inside the hull and of course you could do it as Dingbat suggested
