I am confused about filling unit. My manual tells me to fill it in the down position in one section and in another section tells me to fill it in the up position.

Can someone tell me the correct information?

The unit bleeds down and I'm not sure if it's because I don't have enough fluid in it or if it needs rebuilt or replaced.

If it needs rebuilt, is this something I can do myself? Where do you get the parts to rebuild?

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Filling tilt/trim

Low fluid will only affect the amount of rise, run out of fluid rise stops. Leak down is probably an internal pump problem. Rebuilding is doable but not recommended for the DIYer. Mfg., year, and model would help.

(Leak down = bleeds down)

Wig, if you decide to do the rebuild, document that process if you would and do a thread on it. I'm sure that would help a lot of people that pass through with the same or similar issues. There's been lots of recent talk that the Chinese replacement units are less $$ than the cost to have them rebuilt, you just need to "rubberize" the units and make sure you ground it for galvanic corrosion. There was a thread just the other day that RRitt linked a pump from Ebay that was selling for less than $180.00

Where can I get a good used T and T unit. Or is there a generic unit that can be put on a 1989 Force 85? That bugger gets pretty heavy at the end of the day.

You might need a rebuild but to answer how you fill it up. It has to be in the down position. The only time you fill it up in the up position is when you are bleeding the system. But even then you are not supposed to re-install the filling cap to let the air escape while you cycle the unit.

If it leaks down at all the hyd motor probably needs a rebuild.
Have a manual??Factory manual is best.
It has test procedures for the system.
It doesn't need to have oil on the outside for a leaky hyd motor.
It leaks down internally.

If you find one, don't buy if it comes from a state with salt water!!
You can find them on e-bay and I think there is a generic one, look on internet.
If you find the generic one post the link.

Thanks for all the help. I will post the final decision. I'm a maintenance tech. by trade so taking the tools to something is highly possible.
I have received lots of valuable information on this site and try to share when I can.

Thank You All.

I have the similar problem wlg. Were you able to get the trim working. I was stuck three quarters up and now got the lift cylinder down but can't get the bottom trim cylinder to go down.

Re: Filling tilt/trim

rip, I can raise and lower the engine ok. When it's in the raised position it leaks down fairly quickly. Issue is not corrected yet.

Did you try disconnecting a trim line. You will lose fluid but, should be able to push the trim cylinder in. Just a thought. This tilt/trim is all new to me.

I have been a jon boat with electric trolling motor guy most of my life. Can't use gas motors on the state lakes. The big boat is for the bays in Delaware.

I will try take off the line. I have a retired marine mechanic coming over to check. Funny how we both have opposite problems

Re: Filling tilt/trim

Wig: Leak down is usually caused by either a leaking tilt cylinder or a leaking valve in the pump. IF your pump has screw in valves that use an Allen wrench to remove, simply swapping the front to rear will buy you some time. However, these valves are rebuildable. separate the front portion at the O ring and put in a new small O ring at the spring loaded check. If you search the forum you will find an O ring listed for B&S engine carbs. Buy them at your local lawn mower repair shop.

If swapping the valves does not work, then the O ring inside the tilt cylinder is worn or broken. Remove the tilt cylinder, remove the cap with a spanner, and replace the O ring.

Re: Filling tilt/trim

Finished taking apart an old pump that was run in salt water. I found a total of six o-rings. The springs were rusty which didn't make sense because the unit is sealed.

I figured if I screwed this pump up it would be no big deal. I needed to figure out how to get it all apart with no damage. I beat on the upper cylinders until I got them to come out. I believe that I could have gotten them out easier with air. I did not realize this until after I removed them. And yes, I removed the C clips.

Can anyone tell me they proper way to remove the two small cylinders? Also, where do you get the O-rings?

I still have two pumps. One on the engine and the other I started taking apart. I was told it needed rebuilt so I figure I'll rebuild this one first.

This leads me to another question? In the picture with the springs and gears there is a very small washer. It appears to fit on the small pins that the springs sit on. Does it belong with the pins and should there be two? On the other pump I started there are none. I have no diagrams or pictures. I'm just winging it at this point.2.jpg2.jpg

Re: Filling tilt/trim

you extract check valves by running the pump in a bucket with retaining clips removed.

Thank you RRitt. Do you know if rebuild kits are still available?

Re: Filling tilt/trim

not for valve body. too many variations. cost too much to write insrtructions, too many left over parts, and time on phone would cost more than kit. Maybe there is a force charity somewhere that gives away free repairs.

Just thought I'd ask. Not for free repairs, just answers to questions.

not on valve body. it's a pandora's box that sucks down time.
swap front and rear plugs per frank. That often buys another year.

Thank you.

I have still not gotten this boat in the water yet. I plan to over the holiday weekend and maybe a couple more times this season. I will have the winter to get problem totally resolved.
