Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

was just looking at pricing paint...came across Jamestown Distributors...looked up Interlux Interprotect....then hit video...pretty cool site in that they show you different parts of stripping boat from start to finish...great idea...was a little suprised to see them really going at it with the orbital sanders... check it out if you have time. Kev.

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

Yup saw the video. I actually started removing my bottom paint by sanding it down back in Sept of 07. I stopped because when it came to the corners, i would loose it's shape. This prompted me to the paint stripper now. Did more stripping today for about an hour. Again using acetone to remove the residual. There has to be a better way to wipe off the residual!!! On the way home today I picked up some PURPLE degreaser. That didn't work. I'll have to try something else.

Need to find something that won't evaporate so quickly to remove the residual.

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

Have you seen this stuff? It sounds good. I'm gonna give this try instead of the ace hardware stuff. The Ace Hardware Stripper BURNS my skin! I where eye protection, gloves, and pants. This stuff goes through my shirt and pants and burns like hell if you don't wipe it off!! I have a long way to go to finish so I'll try Ready Strip from Back to Nature instead.....

Here is some info on it....

Ready-Strip? Marine changes color to signal removal time and is specifically designed to remove up to 5 thick layers of marine anti-fouling, top-side and other paints and varnishes in one application. It is applied as a blue and turns light blue when the paint is ready to be removed. Ready-Strip? Marine will not damage the gel coat or any surface. Ready-Strip? Marine stays wet for extended periods of time to penetrate and lift bottom layers, also making it possible to strip larger areas at one time. It is environmentally safe, biodegradable, non-flammable, non-combustible and contains no methylene chloride or caustic. Ready-Strip? Marine is odor-free and can be easily cleaned up with water. As a paste it clings easily to vertical surfaces. For application, it can be brushed, rolled or sprayed. It requires no neutralization (neutral pH).

I like that if it stays on overnight, it won't ruin the gel coat! If it dries out, wet it with water then scrape off, or pressure wash it off! Hopefully it works as advertised!

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

hey WeWefire had success with it...let me know if its worth it...are you using the scotch guard or 3M pads dipped in acetone(scotchguard would probably work better)? I won't get any work done this week until maybe Thurs.

No, I was using a rag soaked in acetone. Ether way, this ace hardware stuff is eats up the gel if it goes directly on the gel coat. When putting on a 2nd coat to get the spots missed, this is when this happens. It's difficult to follow the ragged edges with the brush you know. Anyhow.... awaiting shipment.

I use interlux 202 solvent wash to remove the residual after stripping...also required a little elbow grease but didn't evaporate as fast acetone did then I scuffed with sand paper, wipe with interlux 333 brushing liquid to remove dust:D after that paint away

Well sorry to hear yours is such a pain...mine seems to be a little easier...after the initial removal I am just sanding it off...I agree this stuff would soften the gel if left on thin layer of paint....was trying to attach pictures...file to big...will have to work on it.

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

Yeah, I'm planning on using interlux barrier primer for the hull then brightside for final paint. I think your right, the sander with do the rest. I just don't like the stripper lifting the gel coat. It means more work filling and sanding. I got it down to a science using the ace hardware to minimize the gel coat lifting. I'll feel even better when I use the new stuff. Until then, I'll work on my rotted transom.

post pics of your progress later.

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

Went to West Marine and picked up some West Marine Surfacing putty...anybody try this stuff or should I just use Marine Tex????....is Marine Tex worth the extra dollars or is this stuff from West Marine ok to use as filler... it says its good for hull repair??? hope so. Also changed both motor well tubes...the old ones were just brass tubes pushed in from the outside with no finished part on the inside... these new ones from Moeller "snap-tite", push in from both sides and lock in place...used lots of 3M 4200 to seal...

Since your painting, below water line filler will work just fine. I have to search for that Snap-tite..

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

The picture needs to be resized (not by cropping though). I use a iphoto on mac. I select which pictures I want, and select email, then it gives me the option to reduce the size of the picture without cropping. It's been a few years since I use a PC so I'm not sure how it's done there.

Good luck.

Re: Final cleanup of bottom paint?

You will have to prime.
The bottom paint will not seal the gelcoat.
The primer will seal the gelcoat and then you can paint.
I think the VC Interlux requires its own primer.
