Finally found the right prop....I think.

I know, prop talk and debate on a pontoon is a bit like arguing about which mini van is more areodynamic, but anyway....with toons getting more performance oriented and running bigger motors, prop dynamics is important to us too :)

I have a 24' toon (that measures closer to 26') and it is farily heavy 2300 lbs. I have a new 115 Yam four stroke. It cavitates a lot in turns especially while tubing. Makes 6,000+ rpms lightly loaded and 5600/5800 heavy loaded.

I bought a 13P Stainless PowerTech. Pulled great, but lost 2 mph and rpms ran too high. In fact, I could not run WOT w/o hitting limiter.

I then tried a 15P stainless and could not get it over 5,000. Was lugging. So on went the 15P alum again.

I then had the 13P Stainless cupped and Bingo....seemed to do the trick. Pulls great, hardly cavitates, MUCH more fun for the tubers and driver. Runs around 5800 to 6000 rpms at WOT depending on load and trim level.

The only two issues I noticed is that at idle speed forward, the motor certainly seems to work harder and has more vibrations. I suspect it is due to a much heavier prop and the fact that it is pushing more water. If I add a small amount of gass and go from 800 to 1,000 rpms it is perfectly smooth.

The other thing I noted was that while testing, on one of the initial runs from a stop, I floored it and the rpms climbed normally but then suddenly shot up really high and then back down to 5,000. I think it was an electronic glitch with the tach or perhaps I ventillated. Have run the toon for a few hours since with no issues.

BTW, just a quick update....I now believe I have a tach issue. The tach "wonders" for no apparent reason.

Not sure what tach you have. Faria's seem to come with "factory wandering" built right in.

On the back of the tach there should be a small slot surrounded by pole setting.

Note the pole setting, then using a very small screw driver, rotate the adjuster back and forth in each direction a handful of times.

This often cleans the contacts and eliminates the wackiness.

Yea a lot of tach seam to do that and rotating the pole switch to clean the contact points cures it
