I am starting this new thread based off of a couple of old threads that I started previously. To give you an idea... I have a 1996 Sylvan V196 with a Mercruiser 4.3 LX Gen+ Thunderbolt IV engine. The problems I originally had that I managed to fix on my own was the drive line leak from the tank to the back side of the motor (pain in the butt to get to). The I was taking in water during boating from a water leak coming from the 10" or so pipe on the backside of the carb that has 3 hoses going into it (previous owner had crushed the pipe and it was unable to seal around the hose clamp.... thank god for bilge pumps)! The I had a starting issue which with everyones help I figure out how to run a carb with pumping the choke 3-5 times before starting (what can I say... I'm a fuel-injected guy)! The reason I am taking it to the marina is due to the fact that it is idling at 500 rpms and it idling rough (engine physically and visually "shakes" at idle)! When I am going through an idle zone I have to baby it or it dies. I can get it to restart but I have to get on the throttle and it sems to work itself out. It does GREAT in the open when running over 20 mph. This afternoon I was pulling out of the idle zone doing about 10 or 15 mhp when I turned to talk to my wife and without touching the throttle arm... it jerked a couple of time and then sped up by itself! I have replaced the spark plugs today with the right ones, AC Delco MR43LTS, new filter/seperator, cap/rotor, changed all the fluids, carb cleaned and squirting strong, fresh fuel and carb cleaner treatment. I think the best thing to do is have the marina check the timing, adjust the throttle cables, and double check everything before I take it to Dale Hollow on vacation in 2 weeks. i'd hate to give in... but I have to admit... I am not a marine pro, I wire police cars for a living so this is starting to become a little troublesome. Not to mention... I am starting to guess myself on everything I have done!

For those that were curious... even after all the replacements (oil filter, water/fuel seperator, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, and 93 octane gas + treatment... it turned out to be a timing issue which was 10 degrees off (seemed the previous mechanic did NOT know how to set "base timing" and the carb was well "below" idle level! I took it out today with the added hydrafoil ($30.00 dollars) and it ran BETTER than EVER and "planed" quicker than EVER! Time to head south for vacation!
