I finally got the Johnson 74' 6hp cranked... Took a little pulling to get the gas to the chamber but it cranked. I had my wife behind watching for water to be coming out of the exhaust. But just smoke is all she could see. I shut it down immediately. I had put in a new impeller, changed the gear oil, new plug gaskits, took a little light twisting and gently pushing up and the unit finally slipped up and I bolted her back togeahter. But looks like water would be going somewhere...Would it not?? If the shorter tude slipped past the tube it is suppose to go in, would water be goning in and coming out somewhere??? I really could not tell if the tube went where it was suppose to go anyway. I was just hoping it did. It just felt like it slipped into something , kinda like the way a boot feels when you put it on and your heel slips on down in the boot. I need a little help and will be appreciated... Thank You

I forget if that motor has t-stats. But, if it does it may take awhile to see the water come out. It'll have to come up to temp before you start seeing any water.

Im not sure if it has a t-stat or not... And Im extremely cautious about cranking it again to see if it will heat up and start flowing or worst case senario....A NUCLEAR MELTDOWN....???

Well, I looked. You have a thermostat. It may take a minute or so to come up to temp and open up. Keep feeling the powerhead, if it's too hot to touch shut it down. You should be able to do a one-two-three-ow! with your hand on the powerhead.

That said, don't expect a big stream of water. It'll spit water out with the exhaust.

IWOMBAT, OK.... Good News!!! Don't send money yet... I cranked it up, she warmed up alittle and I got a good stream of water out of exhaust!!! by the way, she sounds nice and smooth......... BUT.. On top of the head above the plugs back of the motor, there is a housing there with three bolts and a small cylinder looking housing that comes down a little and I got water coming out there on top around the gaskit....Not the head gaskit but the one up top Look below ....I wiped up water before pic Whats up???

OK IWOMBAT... I think I got it figured out. That is my t-stat housing on top and looks what appears to be a leak from the gaskit. I have looked it up and will probally go ahead and order new gaskit, t-stat and t-stat seal. Easy fix. What you think??? In the meantime.... I think I will continue with tweeking the carb a little cause since I just installed impeller, gear oil, cleaned carb and installed carb kit, new fuel pump, new points, condensers and two new coils and new plugs.... I just got it cranked up and running and it runs good but still just a little slow on starting.... Thanks for all your help... I was really concerned there for a while. You helped me out... Appreciate it

And I just come back in... I got it running real smooth now,,,low and high idle... And for what ever reason... the leak around the t-stat housing has sealed itself up somewhat... Just a minor leak now... Considering maybe a lil gaskit sealer on the one there now and keep an eye on it... What do you think... But I'm still gonna order tha stuff...But I think Im outa tha woods now.. TY

This was my FIRST outboard project.... I wanna thank everybody on this forum for all the help. I could not have done without your help.

Good job fishermanms! The only other thing you need besides the t-stat and gasket is some 3M 847 Rubber and Gasket Adhesive for coating both sides of the gasket and some Gasket Sealing Compound (or equivalent) to coat the bolts before reinstalling. Pics attached.

Re: Finally got 6hp cranked...BUT no water out of exhaust

Not to be a downer but the gasket adhesive should be used to help told it in place and used very sparingly and the seal needs to be thrown away IMO. When i was in automotive techschool we where taught not to add anything like RTV to a gasket will only make it easyer for it to lose its seal and that was reinforced by a felpro rep. Metal paper metal is 10 times better then metal rubber paper rubber metal. One of the teachers disagred and i am sure somepeople here will to but i think the felpro guy knew what he was talking about since gaskets are his job.
