My boat runs twin 260 merc's with alpha 1's and a while back I managed to come up with a '99 5.7 factory roller-motor for 150 bucks..brand new. Great, now all I needed was a matching engine for the other side.....well great news...one of the guys inthe shop mis-diagnosed a customer's engine with catastrophic failure...and replaced it. Well, all it had was a blown head gasket...so I bought the core for 250 and wa-la I now have a set of matching 5.7 vortech roller motors for 400 bucks. Now to get the flywheels and couplers...etc....some minor upgrades to make at least 350 hp from each.....

Can't cry about it that's for sure.:D
But...it's still gonna cost me another 1200 bucks in parts to put them in the boat. Still cheap all things considered, I guess, but being slow at work right now, 1200 is a fortune. Good thing my motors are still good, I'm thinking. I'd also like to upgrade one of the outdrives to counter-rotating....all big dreams right now....

I would be pretty pi$$ed if that happened to me. How can you mis-diagnose a blown head gasket? Must have had a customer with more money than brains or a heck of a warrant rep...

No kidding......and no, the customer was a poor old black guy who is sort of the shop mascot. No warranty.....customer had to pay all the way. It's a shame really, and a long story, but I explained to the tech that a simple cylinder leakage test would have shown the true problem. He did a compression test and when #3 had no compression, he stopped and said it needed a new motor. Manager loves him soooooo...it must need a new motor. O.k. I'll take the old one, no problem. I didn't make an issue out of it....didn't see the point.
