Thanks everyone who helped me get my motor up and running. i finally got it started, and put in the water the other day. it ran great except for the idle.
its an 1985 evinrude 50hp. i assumed that it wasnt idling good because i messed around with all the throttle cables and linkages, not knowing any better. then i got the idle close but would still want to shut off. i figured that it was close enough for me to take it out in the water so i did. and it ran great once i got it in gear and had some fuel going to it. when i got it back home i decided to pull the carbs off and clean them thinking that maybe something was clogging them. so i pulled the top carb off and noticed that i was missing a bolt from the carb. so i looked at the reed valves and sure enough there it was holding one of the reeds open. I was able to get it out without messing up the reeds, then got it all back together. it was too late to start it up so hopefully it will idle better tommorrow morning.
if im thinking about it correctly. having that reed valve open will cause the motor to run lean at idle because its letting more air than needed into the cylinders right?
