My motor SSN j225txcdag7163689 1986 225hp Just ate up the lower unit. Could anyone out there help me learn how to ID a suitable replacement? Shaft length etc? I have been told that the lower unit from a V6 cross flow will not work on a looper, how can I id the differences and figure out what will work for me?

Mac

Re: Finding a new lower unit questions.

Any V6 lower unit from 1979 on will work. Your motor seems to be a 25" model so thats what you need. Just use your shift rod and adjust it for your 1986 motor.

You can also use a V4 from 1979 on and any V8 but the gear ratios are -- obviously -- different.

Re: Finding a new lower unit questions.

Thanks for the reply, How can I tell if it came off a v4 6 or 8 in the bone yard? What should the ratio be for this? Turns of the engine shaft vs prop shaft? Am I understanding correctly, I can use the Shaft from any of those but I need to use my existing shift rod?

I have been told that the cross flow v6 has a different ratio from the looper v6 is this true?

Is there an easy way to check the unit? I don't have any way to pressure check one. I think figure I'll drain a bit of fluid out and feel it for grit any other ideas?

Mac

Your best bet is to call Jack or Gordon over at Superior Marine and just tell them what you need. A 25" V6 gearcase for a 1986 V6 looper. 800-338-9281, 239-267-6722. They're in Ft Myers.

Thanks I will call him in the AM. I am a bit out of my comfort zone with swapping parts that look the same but do different things! I was getting some e-bay fever this morning and had to talk myself down.

If I tell him you send me will he give me a better or worse price ;)

Mac

WOW, Sticker shock! I figure this motor running is only worth $500. I have some serious thinking to do here.....

Mac

What about redoing yours? How bad is it? Generally if the case, shafts and carrier are OK its worth rebuilding yours.

I haven't broken it down, but I assume the worst case. There was literally no oil in the case when I drained it. Only black water and metal shavings.

In your post

I think this will be the route I go. I found a cross flow unit locally that could be a good candidate for the shift rod swap.

Mac

Re: Finding a new lower unit questions.

All right I bought a Lower Unit 25” shaft from a cross flow motor. My plan is to swap the shift rod, water pump + new impeller, change LU fluid run 30 min and change the fluid again to look for any contaminants. Am I missing anything?

Mac
